From the Administrator

Drew Harris

As we start the month of September, students are back in their classrooms, and school activities are rolling into top gear. It’s a busy, yet exciting time in our schools and at the service unit. Let us never forget that these children are the reason each of us is in these educational roles—that their safety and educational growth along with their social and emotional well-being should always be our top priorities.

This year, I am starting my 35th year in education, the last 21 of which were in the position of school superintendent; however, this is my first role in the ESU setting. In my first two months as the administrator at ESU 9, I have had the opportunity to visit all of the public school member districts, to meet with their superintendents, and to tour many of the facilities. We are blessed to have excellent school districts and educational leaders in our area. My goal is to understand the services that will best meet the needs of our member school districts. It is my hope to also attend school board meetings in each district in the coming year.

It has been my pleasure to get to know the staff of ESU 9 in this short time. What an outstanding group of caring and supportive people to work with! It has truly been a pleasure. In the coming months, we will work to create a shared vision of what we need to do to maximize our ability to provide excellence and innovation to serve our member districts to our greatest potential.

Make it a great 2019–2020 school year!

ESU 9 New Staff - Mental Health Practitioners Spotlight

ESU 9 is excited to welcome many new staff members for the 2019-2020 school year. Over the next few months, we will spotlight new staff and programs. This month's focus is our Mental Health Practitioners. Please welcome these new staff members to the ESU 9 area when you see them in your schools!

Leisel Hogan - Licensed Mental Health Practitioner. She will be serving Doniphan-Trumbull, South Central Unified and Silver Lake. Leisel lives in Hastings with her three kiddos and two elderly pups. Prior to joining ESU9, she worked in private practice primarily focusing on at risk youth involved in the juvenile probation, foster care, and/or court systems. She has experience in a wide range of areas including but not limited to drug and alcohol abuse/dependence, depression, anxiety, peer relations, trauma, grief, self-harm, and family distress.

C
arolyn Haney - Licensed Mental Health Practitioner. She will be serving Kenesaw Schools. Carolyn has a Masters degree in Social Work and has been a licensed mental health provider since 2003. Her practice experience is varied, including community readiness, working with children who have developmental disabilities and their families, adults with disabilities in an advocacy role, and in early child hood mental health.  Ms. Haney has taught undergraduate and graduate social work students for over 19 years and was the school social work certification coordinator during this time. She has expertise in early childhood mental health  (birth to age 8) and co-taught the early childhood mental health certificate courses with a colleague in Counselor Education.

She enjoys working as a team and believe that relationships are the key to being an effective team member.

While originally from Chadron, Nebraska, she spent twenty years in Wyoming prior to moving to Kearney in 2016. She and her husband have three girls, the oldest is a geologist and lives in Colorado, the middle daughter is in middle school and the youngest is in 5th grade.

Ms. Haney enjoys being outdoors, serving as her daughter’s Girl Scout leader, reading, knitting and spending time with her family

She is excited to be with ESU9 for her final internship year of the School Psychology, Ed.S program at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
