The Color of Compromise
By: Pastor Mary Alice Birdwhistell

Last week marked the 400th anniversary of the arrival of enslaved people into the United States. At CBF this summer, we acknowledged the painful truths of this anniversary by gathering at the historic Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, where 4 young girls were killed in a church bombing in 1963.

There was a palpable discomfort in the room for us to be worshipping in the physical space where people had experienced such radical hatred and injustice, and yet worshipping in this physical space was also deeply compelling. Our guest preacher was Carolyn McKinstry, who grew up at Sixteenth Street and survived the bombing. As she shared in her sermon, “Crisis kept me spellbound for twenty years, but I made up for lost time when I got out...I heard God telling me, ‘I am with you, and you can walk this walk.’”

I returned from CBF convicted that both I as your pastor and we as Calvary have much work to do to “make up for lost time.” This summer, I put together a team of people from Calvary to explore how we as a predominantly white church might begin to talk about race and racism in ways that are honest, meaningful, and transformative. Each person on this team had approached me at some point over the past year to share about work they had been doing related to racial equity or with ideas about how we as a church might respond. This time around the table with Josh Caballero, Geneece Goertzen, John Hunt, Bobby Martinez, Jon Singletary, Doug Weaver, and Elaine White has been sacred space; our conversations have been vulnerable, challenging, uncomfortable, and holy.

We sat in painful silence the Sunday night after the horrific racially-motivated shooting in El Paso, convicted that this is work we must be doing as the Church. We quickly began to ask ourselves, “What do we do?” and “How do we fix this?” However, as we listened to the collective wisdom around the table, we discerned that as a predominantly white congregation, our work must begin by looking at ourselves. It’s not until we truly begin to see the problem of unrecognized racism within each of us that we can become agents of change who act against it. We believe that our work begins with asking ourselves hard questions, sitting with truths that make us uncomfortable, and listening to the stories of our brothers and sisters of color. All of this work is grounded in our sincere desire to follow in the ways Jesus, who calls us to love our neighbors as ourselves.

As a starting point, we will be offering two, ten-week small group opportunities this fall based on Jemar Tisby’s book The Color of Compromise: The Truth about the American Church’s Complicity in Racism. Tisby has spoken on campus at Baylor several times over the past year, and he was a keynote speaker at CBF this summer as well. His work is both challenging and accessible, painful and inspirational. Jon Singletary will lead one group starting on Wednesday, September 18 from 6:00-7:00 PM, and Josh Caballero will lead another group starting on Sunday, September 22 from 9:30-10:30 AM. Books cost $12 each, and you can order a copy by contacting John Hunt (jhunt@cbcwaco.net). If you can’t participate in a group, you’re welcome to read the book with us. There will also be more opportunities to engage this spring if you can’t participate in the fall.

As Bobby Martinez shared in our last meeting, we often want to move too quickly to the work of reconciliation, but the hard work of realization must come first. Our collective hope for this time together is that we might approach these conversations from a place of humility, with a sincere desire to grow in self-awareness, and ultimately that all of us might be transformed by the Spirit of God at work among us.

Spirituality in the Seasons of Life:

“Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh?”

Mary Alice Birdwhistell
Change Is Hard
By: Associate Pastor John Hunt

I’ll be honest, I’ve had misgivings about all of this. Any number of moments come time mind: dropping the kids off for their first day at a new school, having to use Google Maps to find my way to Home Depot, running through our neighborhood before sunrise and experiencing what can only be compared to exercising in the heart of the Amazon rain forest. In a strange twist, leaving Hardin-Simmons and Abilene was like leaving home for college, a tectonic shift in the nature and structure of our family’s life. In fact, not since I was a 117 lb., 18 year-old freshman have I felt this disoriented, this uncomfortable, this lonely.

In the Bible, in the book of Exodus, Moses and his less-than-merry band of followers made their way out of Egypt toward the literal Promised Land. The texts between Exodus chapter 14 and Exodus chapter 18 are sometimes referred to as the “Sojourn” narratives. In these stories, the Israelites faced a series of obstacles which God miraculously overcame, often within the framework of partnership with Moses, to allow them to continue on their journey.

In chapter 16, as they encountered a shortage of food, the people cried out to Moses, “If only we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate our fill of bread; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.” In other words, “It was so much better back when we were slaves! At least we had regular food!”

Now, Abilene is not Egypt (and I don’t remember any fleshpots), and Waco is certainly not the wilderness (it’s much too swampy for that), yet I do have sympathy for the Israelites in this moment. Sometimes the change is so thorough, so disruptive, that it feels like it might be better to have what was familiar, even if what was familiar was harmful (all the more so if it wasn’t). During this season of change, I have to admit that there have been moments and even days when I have longed for the familiar, but just as in Exodus, that longing is not the end of the story.

For every misgiving and every frustration, there have been even more moments of hospitality, love, and kindness shown by this church to our family. We have watched and experienced God at work not only in our lives in various ways, but specifically through all of you. Calvary, you have been our Moses, the one who partnered with God to do the miraculous and allow the journey to continue. I am reminded of the 45 minute moving crew, or the image of Pat Weaver doing our dishes and Julie Corley standing atop our kitchen counter lining cabinets ninja-style as we moved in, or Tiffany and Andy Hogue hosting our kids at their home, or the Singletarys and Chad Eggleston checking in on our family to make sure we were good, or all the wonderful meals that first week (and all the tea!). These, alongside countless other acts large and small, reveal the hand of God at work in this new season of life.

Change is hard, and there’s no short-cut. Knowing a place and building new relationships just take time, but thanks be to God for a church family like Calvary with whom to share the journey.
Wednesday Nights Return!
We hope you will join us on Wednesday nights this fall at Calvary! Our weekly activities start back Wednesday, Sept. 4. At 6:00 PM, there will be FUSE Kids activities for PreK-K children and 1st-6th grade students, and youth Midweek for 7th-12th graders. Hopefully you’ve seen announcements about several adult offerings this fall, including our two-week special series for parents, "Engaging Children and Youth in Worship” (led by Ali, Jenni, and Randall), a study on the book of David based on Leap Over a Wall by Eugene Peterson (led by Chad Eggleston), and starting on Wednesday, September 18, a study and conversation on The Color of Compromise by Jemar Tisby (led by Jon Singletary). And, the intergenerational choir will continue their weekly rehearsal time together on Wednesdays at 7 PM. Childcare is also available on Wednesday evenings starting at 5:45 PM.

We are in the process of coordinating details for what we hope will be a fun food truck dinner on the first Wednesday nights of the month this fall. This will be a great opportunity to connect and share a meal as we kick off the semester together, and also to support local businesses in our community. We will share more information on Sunday in worship and next week!

Engaging in Worship with Youth & Children
Parents of children and youth are invited to join us for a 2-week special topics series on Sunday or Wednesdays to discuss together why worship matters, why it’s important for youth and children to engage in worship alongside their families, and how worship impacts youth and children’s spiritual formation. Randall, Jenni, and Ali have been collaborating to provide two sessions that will encourage you in re-imagining worship as spiritual formation.

Engaging with Youth in Worship:

Youth Parent Session 1 Wed 9/4 (6-7pm), repeated on Sun 9/8 (9:30-10:30 AM)

Youth Parent Session 2 Wed 9/11 (6-7pm), repeated on Sun 9/15 (9:30-10:30 AM)

Engaging with Children in Worship:

Children’s Parent Session 1 Wed 9/4 (6-7pm), repeated on Sun 9/8 (9:30-10:30 AM)

Children’s Parent Session 2 Wed 9/11 (6-7pm), repeated on Sun 9/15 (9:30-10:30 AM)

Leap Over a Wall: Earthy Spirituality for Everyday Christians
Join us on Wednesdays this fall as Chad Eggleson leads us through Eugene Peterson’s book Leap Over a Wall on the life of David. Last year, Chad led a vibrant intergenerational Bible study that enjoyed diving into Scripture together each week, and we are eager to begin meeting again. All are welcome to join us starting Wednesday, September 4 at 6 PM. Copies of the book are available at church for $10/each. Contact John Hunt (jhunt@cbcwaco.net) if you would like to purchase a copy.

Intergenerational Choir
Calvary's Intergenerational Choir will resume meeting on Wednesday nights from 7-8 PM in the Chapel. No matter your age or musical background, anyone who loves to sing is welcome to join us! For more information, contact Randall at randall_bradley@baylor.edu.

West Avenue School Service Opportunities

  • We collected 65 backpacks for our friends at West Ave. and a mound of school supplies to carry them through the entire year. Principal Weeks was blown away by your generosity, love, and support. Thank you, Calvary!

  • We are recruiting mentors to read with students at West Avenue in the coming year. Mentoring requires about 30 minutes of your time, once a week, during the day and lunch time of your choice between 11:00-12:45. If you haven’t mentored before, you can sign up at https://www.starsbookclubs.com/apply.html. If you have mentored before, you should have received an email on August 2 with instructions to sign up for the coming year. For more information, see the Tower or contact Jennifer Low at jlow@hot.rr.com.
  • This year, West Avenue’s budget was cut by 15%, and they no longer have some of the aids and tutors they have had to support them in the past. If you would like to tutor children on a regular basis for a few hours each week at West Avenue, please contact Jennifer Low. She will connect you with Principal Weeks to begin making plans for the year.

“Teach Us to Number our Days”: Spirituality in the Seasons of Life
Join us for our new worship series: Teach Us to Number our Days: Spirituality in the Seasons of Life.

Each week of this series, we will focus on a different “season of life” and engage with what Scripture has to teach us about this particular age/season. What can we learn from people in this season, and how can we be the  “family of God” for them in this place? What does God have to teach us through this season?

“Teach us to number our days, so that we might live wisely and well.” (Psalm 90:12)

Welcoming, Hospitality, and Extended Session
We have been having a large number of newcomers join us for worship this summer at Calvary, which is so exciting! In an effort to make sure we are able to welcome and visit with everyone on Sundays, we would like to add a second monthly rotation of greeters on Sunday mornings from about 10:25-11:00 AM. We also need more people to join our extended session rotation to care for Calvary’s youngest members during the worship service. This is a significant ministry not only to parents, but to the whole Calvary family. If you would like to help with extended session, please contact Gabby at gwarnick@cbcwaco.net. If you’d like to help with greeting on Sunday mornings, please contact John Hunt at jhunt@cbcwaco.net. Thank you for helping us to care for and offer hospitality to our Calvary family and friends!
August is National Immunization Awareness Month
National Immunization Awareness Month is a great time to promote vaccines and remind family, friends, and coworkers to stay up to date on their shots.

Communities across the country use the month each year to raise awareness about the important role vaccines play in preventing serious, sometimes deadly, diseases across the lifespan.

Vaccines aren’t just for kids – adults need to get vaccinated to stay protected from serious illnesses like the flu, measles, and pneumonia. Click on this link to read useful information about this topic.
Contributing Financially to Calvary
Each week, we present our offerings as an act of worship. However, many of us pay for the majority of our expenses online or through an automatic-withdraw from our bank accounts, and each month when we pay our expenses, we can present an offering to God in these ways too. You can give to Calvary online at http://cbcwaco.net/give-to-calvary, but please note that 1-2% of your gift will go toward transaction fees. If you would like to set up an automatic withdrawal from your bank account, which has no transaction fees, please contact Phil Sitton at psitton@cbcwaco.net
