Week  13
FARMER'S MESSAGE
By Jocelyn Craig
Windmill Field Manager

Labor Day is a time to celebrate the laborer. As we enter into Labor Day weekend, let's reflect on the origins of this American holiday. In the 1800s, in light of the Industrial Revolution and "progress," labor shifted away from agriculture and towards factories. Factory workers of all ages were often forced to work 7 days a week in poor conditions in order to earn barely enough to keep a roof over their heads. It was this collective voice that was impetus for the nationally recognized holiday.

I think it is important to note that today at Sylvester Manor, the work that we do, however strenuous it may sometimes be, is by choice. And, we too will have the pleasure of putting our feet up this Monday and enjoying our "laborer's share."

The following is an excerpt from a letter addressed to Edgar Allan Poe, written by Abijah M. Ide, Jr. October 1, 1843.

I am eighteen; and
This have I learned, that to my hand,
Is given the labor of the land:
My foot must tread the furrowed ground,
And stand when harvest-time comes round:
To me is given the laborer's care
—
In autumn, mine the laborer's share.

Enjoy the Harvest!
