As the summer winds down , Blue Cactus Press is getting ready for a full season of book launches, tradeshows, and collaborations here in the Pacific Northwest. Read below to get an idea of what we've been up to and where we're headed this fall, starting with Michael Haeflinger's book launch!

September 27: Low Static Rage Book Launch

Join us for the official book launch of Michael Haeflinger’s debut poetry collection, Low Static Rage, at King’s Books on Friday, September 27, at 7 PM. Haeflinger will read from his stunning new poetry collection, chat with the audience about his work, and sign copies of Low Static Rage during the event. He’ll also be accompanied by musical guests for a portion of the evening.

October 6: Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Tradeshow 

The PNBA Fall Tradeshow is the premier book industry event in the Pacific Northwest. Held annually in late September or early October, the show features three days of events aimed at the owners of and buyers for independent bookstores, publishers, authors, librarians, and other people in the bookselling industry. Blue Cactus Press will participate in PNBA’s annual tradeshow for the second year in a row, and we’re incredibly excited to chat with other industry professionals about what we’ve been up to, our newest books, and where we’re headed in the coming year. 

(IMPORTANT NOTE: PNBA Tradeshows are open only to book industry professionals. The shows are NOT open to the general public, although authors, booksellers, and publishers can register to attend here)

 

October 17: The Art of Naming My Pain Book Launch 

Join us for the official book launch of Kellie Richardson’s sophomore poetry collection, The Art of Naming My Pain. Richardson will read from her new collection, which includes poetry, art and essays, and exhibit her artwork included in the book. Kellie will also chat with audience members about her creative work and sign copies of The Art of Naming My Pain at the event. Festivities will be held at Fab-5 in Tacoma’s Hilltop neighborhood, on Thursday, October 17, at 6:30 PM. This is a free and public event.

We Teamed-up with Small Press Distribution!

We're excited to announce we've been accepted to Small Press Distribution (SPD), a professional organization that markets and distributes books created by independent publishers across the US! This is *BIG* move for BCP and all of our authors, as it means our books will be more widely available to folks outside of our local, Pacific Northwest Market market. If you're interested in learning more about SPD, check out their website, here. 

 

We Hired a Graphic Designer!

This summer, we teamed up with an incredible graphic designer, Sam Tait, to work on our book covers! For those of you who don't know Sam, let us introduce you. Sam Tait is a nonbinary designer and Illustrator. Sam is a graduate of Northwest College of Art & Design, and they've been working as a freelance creator for over five years. They've worked with Write253 and the Tacoma Public Library, and enjoy spreading art through education and storytelling. When they aren't teaching or volunteering with local youth, Sam advocates for other LGBTQA+ creators and runs The Gayng, a queer Dungeons and Dragons group. Look for more of Sam's work with Blue Cactus Press over the coming year!
 
 

We Moved to Union Club Tacoma

This August, we moved our office to Union Club Tacoma, where we're co-working in style in the Velvet Room. Although this might not sound like a big deal, it's made an incredible difference in our productivity and has allowed us to better connect with other movers-and-shakers in our creative community. Bonus: we're more creative when we're surrounded by our peers, so expect some cool collaborations in the near future!

The Prickly Pear Podcast

 
 

Earlier this spring, we snagged an interview with Robert Lashley, an exceptionally lyrical and achingly honest poet. Originally from Hilltop, Tacoma, Robert is a Jack Straw Fellow, Artist Trust Fellow, and nominee for a Stranger Genius Award. He joined us for a cathartic and open conversation about authenticity in art, the manifestation of grief, and the weight of public shaming. We also dived into respectability politics, gentrification and heritage, and were fortunate that Robert shared his poetry with us throughout the conversation.
