Welcome Back! 9

We are looking forward to celebrating the start of the new academic year with all of you at our welcome reception this Thursday from 3-5 pm on the Posvar Patio. We had a very exciting summer with the inaugural launch of the Summer Institute for Chinese Studies, the addition of new center staff and our director Joseph Alter playing a key role in the chancellor's trip to India. This Fall, we will kick off our Asia Pop Speaker Series with a focus on the Global Legacy of Asian Popular Music starting with a keynote lecture by Dr. Suk-Young Kim on K-Pop next Thursday September 5 @ 5:30 pm at the Frick Fine Arts Auditorium.
BUILDING ASIA: THE ENVIRONMENTAL HISTORY OF THE IRON AND STEEL INDUSTRY IN POSTWAR EAST ASIA
Professor Maohong Bao from Peking University will examine the steel industry's global environmental history from four aspects: the development of the iron and steel industry in postwar East Asia, East Asia's iron ore and coal import and the environmental impact of resource extraction in production areas; the environmental consequences of iron processing in East Asia; and East Asia's steel exports and their recycling. The lecture will be held at 12 Noon on Wednesday September 4 in 4130 Posvar.
