Welcome to the spring edition of Club Spirit

Congratulations to all teams who made finals this year. The City looks forward to hearing about your club's finals campaign. Email your finals news to the Club Development Officer so it can be included in upcoming newsletters.

Thank you to all the clubs who completed the Annual Club Survey. The survey is designed to ensure that the City has the most up to date club contact details and helps us gauge the current and future needs of your club. All surveys that were received by 30 August went into the draw to win 1 of 3 prizes. Congratulations to the following clubs:

  • 1st Prize (Samsung Tablet) - Manning Tennis Club
  • 2nd Prize ($250 Rebel Sport voucher) - Manning Rippers Football Club
  • 3rd Prize ($150 Rebel Sport voucher) - South Perth Bridge Club

The City is putting together a couple of club resources and we are looking for some photos to be included. If you have any photos that the City can use, please let me know or email them to clubspirit@southperth.wa.gov.au.

Congratulations also to Manning Tennis Club who have had three members nominated as finalists for the 2019 Tennis West Industry Awards.

I look forward to sharing the latest news and information with your club and I encourage you to forward the Club Spirit newsletter to anyone who may be interested in keeping in touch with the City's leisure and sporting services.

Kind regards,
Jess Fordham

Subiaco Seating installed at Ernest Johnson Oval

Ernest Johnson Oval (EJ Oval) has received and repurposed a slice of history, with seating from the now-demolished Subiaco Oval installed for families and attendees to use.

Six metres of seating on a tiered platform is now available for spectator seating commemorating the former Subiaco Oval.

The City is pleased to reuse this relic seating, originally from the two-tier stand constructed in the early 1980s. The jarrah timber seating was received in very good condition and has been freshly painted and renumbered before installation.

A number of connections underpin this project, with AFL and WAFL umpire headquarters and weekly community umpire training sessions at EJ Oval. The umpires are longstanding users of the facility, with, at any one time, up to 120 umpires from grassroots to professional level practising their skills to play a crucial part in WA footy.

Be part of the City's 2020 Arts, Events and Culture calendar

Is you club or association planning to hold a community event in 2020? Local businesses, organisations or groups are invited to submit local events for the City's February to April 2020 Arts, Events and Culture calendar. Expressions of Interest (EOI) for this period will close 4pm, Thursday 24 October 2019. To find out more or to submit an EOI visit the City's website

Active Reserve Bookings

The City receives a high volume of Active Reserve Bookings. To assist us with your request and ensure your booking is processed correctly, please read these friendly reminders:

  • Appoint a facility/grounds booking contact person
  • Ensure line markings don't damage the turf
  • Only use approved sports line marking products and not chemicals
  • Review fixtures.

Any extra club bookings will require prior approval. If your club receives a request to book a reserve, please refer them to book through the City.

Sports Club fundraising made easy
Clubs are always struggling to raise funds. It’s common that clubs do the same activities each year, and approach the same people for support.

You probably think there is a better way – and you’re right.

Register now for Sports Club Fundraising Made Easy to discover how to successfully raise funds at your club.
Community Funding Program

The City recognises the importance of community development, and as such provides support to community organisations and non-incorporated community groups through the community funding program.

The grant is open for non-recurrent projects that provide benefits to our community. The grants are open year-round or until funding is exhausted.

Targeted Participation Grant

The Targeted Participation Program provides funding that enables organisations to promote participation, healthy lifestyles and active engagement of Western Australian communities in sport and recreation.

In 2019/20, funding for the Targeted Participation Program is being provided as a joint initiative between the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and Healthway. Applications are now open for projects that create quality, affordable sport and active recreation activities with a focus on engaging the low participation groups. To apply visit Targeted Participation Program

Garage Sale Trail 19-20 October

The City has over 40 registered stalls and sales in this year's Garage Sale Trail - the nation's biggest day of garage sales on 19 and 20 October 2019. There is still time for your club or association to join the reuse movement and host a sale, simply register online.

Preferred RAF site determined by Council
Council has confirmed the Collier Park Golf Course in Como as the preferred site to locate the City’s proposed Recreation and Aquatic Facility (RAF).

The current lack of indoor sporting facilities within the City, along with the need to determine the ongoing viability and long term use of George Burnett Leisure Centre, Collier Park Golf Course, and the strong community desire for an aquatic centre led the City to initiate the RAF feasibility project.

Formal governance arrangements with prospective partners will now be established and importantly, all decision milestones on the progress of the project will be reported to Council for its determination.
