In accordance with the Arizona Minimum Wage and Paid Time Off Initiative that was passed in 2016, the University will implement an increase of the minimum wage to $12.00 per hour effective December 30, 2019.

We have provided details about the change below.

Who is affected?

All employees and student workers who are currently paid less than $12.00 per hour will be affected.

Your department is encouraged to review the impact the new minimum wage will have on departmental budgets and adjust operational plans, including ERE, accordingly.

When will employees and student workers see a change in their paychecks?

The new rate will appear on the January 17, 2020, paychecks.

Do I have to do anything?

No. The Division of Human Resources will automatically complete pay adjustments in UAccess Employee to bring employees and student workers to the new $12.00-per-hour minimum wage.

Your department is responsible for ensuring that new employees or student workers with an effective hire date of January 1, 2020, or later are paid at least the $12.00-per-hour minimum wage.

What will happen if I have an open job posting with a minimum rate of less than $12.00 per hour?

The Human Resources Recruitment & Outreach Team will adjust open postings to the new minimum wage, and new hires cannot be paid less than $12.00 per hour.

Effective December 20, 2019, all new postings need to be listed using the new minimum rate.

Who is responsible for funding the new minimum wage?

Departments are responsible for funding the new minimum wage.

How will this affect the University Staff pay structure?

There will be no changes to the University Staff pay structure. The pay structure was built with $12.00 per hour as the minimum for pay grade 1.

How do I determine affected individuals in my unit?

To identify affected employees and student workers, go to the Minimum Wage dashboard in UAccess Analytics (Employee > Compensation > Arizona State Minimum Wage). Note that any employee or student worker with a future-dated increase currently in queue may still appear on this report.

Is my department required to increase the pay of employees and students already at or above the $12.00-per hour-threshold?

No. However, if funds are available, your department may wish to adjust other salaries. To address wage compression issues, including salary increases, please contact your HR Organizational Consultant1.
