TCV Weekly News: 12 September 2019

Kia ora koutou,

Welcome to this weeks newsletter.
It has been a big week for TCV with the Meet the Candidates forum last Monday - what a miserable wet day it was but still we had an amazing turn out of candidates and public with just about every seat filled. See our pics below...

Next month we are back to our normal network meeting at the council chambers with guest speaker Cheryl Scott from Life Unlimited. Cheryl will be talking to us ab
out the Life Unlimited FREE hearing support service on the 14th October at 12.30pm.

In November we will be holding the annual Nan Evan Awards which is a very special award that acknowledges long-serving volunteers in our community. NOW is the time for our network members to make their nominations before the close off date on 30 October.

Also in November is the TCV Annual General Meeting. Here is your chance to really get involved! 😃 Nominations for positions on the Executive Committee are now open.
Remember only our financial members are eligible to vote and have their say on who will sit on the Exec this coming year so make sure your organisation has paid the membership fee before 11 November to make your vote count.

Meet the Candidates Forum
A huge Thank You to all involved making the TCV Meet the Candidates Forum such a worthwhile event and to all who braved the cold and came to hear what the candidates had to say. It was awesome to see some 45 members of the public and 17 Candidates turn out on such a dismal, wet and windy day.

A big thank you to Leigh Pink from Toastmasters for her time keeping. Candidates had only a minute to answer the questions and Leigh kept them to time with a system of green & red lights and ding of the bell to call time. A minute was quite tight for the candidates who had to make their key points upfront - any longer and we wouldn’t have finished on time. As it was we had 15 minutes to spare and opened the floor for extra questions.
From top left we have Leigh Pink keeping time, Tina Karaitiana giving her key messages, Alice Kibble addressing the crowd and our own TCV Chair, Liz Graham as MC.

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori
This week is Māori language week. So we thought we'd help you find some really useful resources for more understanding of Māori culture and tikanga. And to encourage the TCV network to kōrero Māori.

Government announces that Interest Rate Cap is to be introduced.
Missed from last weeks newsletter but being Money Week thought it's a good time to catch you up...
Last April-May you might remember that TCV was working collaboratively with Gisborne Budget Moni Ora and FinCap to Help Fight Against Predatory Lending and the harm that was being caused to our community through high household indebtedness.
On 3 September we got news that an Interest rate cap is to be introduced. Click on the banner below and read more about it.

Cheap Eats
You may have seen our member organisation featured in the local paper a couple of weeks ago (27 Aug) and wondered if they still have those fantastic little cookbooks - well they do.
Gisborne Budget Moni Ora say they have re-ordered at least twice since that article but they still have a good supply if you'd like to send your clients in to collect one....or collect one for yourself.
The book is packed full of great low-cost healthy recipes that help keep tummies full and satisfied.

News from CNA:

Funding Gap for community social services
Report shows $630 million government funding shortfall for community social services

SSPA has released an independent study into the gap between what the social service sector is funded to deliver and what it in fact delivers.  The report is an important tool for us to advocate for fair funding for our sector so that we can support positive outcomes for children, families, whānau and communities that we work with.

SSPA and our members are calling on the government to:
•    support an immediate resolution that addresses the pay inequality between providers and the public sector,
•    make a serious commitment to close the funding gap in Budget 2020, and
•    commit to working with social services providers and the philanthropic sector on the longer-term issues that are identified, to achieve an effective and sustainable funding model.
