From the Director...
This weekend is our first band competition! In preparation, my column this week will discuss how competitions are scored. First, however, it is important to understand the position taken by the staff of Central Bucks HS East on the value of competition from a music education perspective.
We believe that competitive performances adjudicated by high-quality professionals serve to guide our design, encourage the students to reach increasingly greater standards of performance, and acknowledge their achievements. Adjudication is inherently subjective. “Ranking” bands is a partially flawed process because it is essentially impossible to evaluate all of the factors that differentiate one ensemble from another. Therefore, critique from adjudicators is presented to students with the primary intent that they learn and improve. While succeeding at a competition is certainly rewarding, the first priority of the design team and instructional staff is the development of intrinsic rewards for the students. We believe that students who deeply believe in what they are doing, feel a sense of belonging to a cause greater than themselves, and perform with artistic confidence are not only more likely to succeed in competitive performance, but will carry these lessons throughout their lives whatever their pursuits.
Band competitions are governed by several different associations, which in our region include Cavalcade of Bands, US Bands, Tournament of Bands, and independent shows. This year the schedule and venues led us to shows sanctioned by Cavalcade. Bands are placed into classes (or divisions), based on number of performing members. In Cavalcade competitions, the class sizes are named around a patriotic theme. We compete in the “Yankee” class, and we are among the smallest of the bands in that division. All competitions feature bands of various sizes and competition styles.
At the end of the show, awards are presented to the “winners” and rankings in each class. At some shows, there are caption-specific awards presented, including Best Music, Best Visual Performance, Best Color Guard, Best Percussion, or even sometimes Best Pit Crew! Follow this link to learn more about the Cavalcade judging process.
Yes, winning a show feels unbelievably good – just ask our kids. But when the first and second place bands are one tenth of a point apart from each other, what does that really mean? We love competitions because they are the events that put the band first. The feedback helps us improve, and the audience is as supportive as they come. There isn’t a band on the field that isn’t giving it everything they’ve got. Let’s keep competitions as a priority in the season, but let’s also keep the priorities straight in competitions.
Let’s go out to the show, have a great time, give a big cheer for all of the bands, and the biggest cheer for our kids. It makes a huge difference to know the audience is excited during the show. Please feel free to clap and cheer in the middle of the show, especially after soloists, impressive moves, exciting tosses, or cool general effect moments.

URGENT!!
TRAILER CREW, CHAPERONES AND CONCESSIONS HELP NEEDED FOR THIS SATURDAY
ESPECIALLY THE HOME GAME v PENNSBURY!
Visit the Season Signup Genius to volunteer.
NEW PROCEDURE THIS YEAR:
All volunteers please sign in at your stations (Chaperones, Concessions, Trailer Crew) so that you can get credit for your time.
ATTENTION: HOME GAME VOLUNTEERS
This season, all band parent volunteers who are signed up for chaperone, concessions, or trailer crew will be required to pick up a field pass prior to entering the gate for the game. This will help the football volunteers who man the gate and improve the flow of people in and out, as well as allow you to skip the line to get in.
Pass locations for each area are as follows:
Chaperones: uniform room, small gray cabinet
Trailer Crew: large band trailer
Concessions: white cabinet in band room near the door
(where the band box is)
All home game volunteers should pick up a badge prior to reporting/signing in. Badges are for volunteer use only and must be turned in before you leave. As always, thank you for helping out!
Remember that all families are REQUIRED to sign up for at least 2 volunteer slots during the season.
All volunteers are required to obtain state-mandated clearances. For information on how to obtain clearances, click here.
If you have questions about volunteering, please contact:
Cyndee Van Siclen, Chaperone Coordinator
Christa Afflerbach or Heather Blady, Concessions Co-Chairs
Mike DeRosier, Equipment Crew Chair

Attention Parents:
Get Your Candygrams!
At many competitions, the host school sells candy with decals you can fill out with your child’s name and a message. The kids get the candy once they return to East and really look forward to it. It’s also nice to purchase one for any of your child’s friends whose parents may not have made it to the show. The kids get a kick out of receiving them and the proceeds go to the marching band that hosted.
