News, Programs, Resources & More This Week:

Library Announces Friday Evening Program Schedule
The Sausalito Public Library will present more than forty adult programs during the fall of 2019, including Thursday evening speakers, mobile device workshops, Metropolitan Opera previews, and museum docent lectures. The biggest events take place on Friday evenings inside the library, which has a giant presentation screen and room for a hundred chairs. This fall there are eight Friday evening programs between September 13 and November 8.

Friday, September 13 at 7:00 p.m.
The Art of Dying Well
Bestselling local author Katy Butler will discuss her new handbook of preparations — practical, communal, physical, and spiritual — to help you make the most of your remaining time, be it months, years, or decades.

Friday, September 20 at 7:00 p.m.
Fire in Sausalito!
Past and present Sausalito firefighters will share reminiscences and tips on fire prevention in this panel discussion presented by the Sausalito Historical Society, to be followed by a reception for a new exhibit on the topic.

Friday, September 27 at 7:00 p.m.
Bogart and Bacall: A True Love Hollywood Romance
Peter Robinson of KALW returns to the Sausalito Library for a look at the love affair of Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart, featuring clips from their classic noir films of the 1940s. 

Friday, October 4 at 7:00 p.m.
The Bolinas-Fairfax Road
Local author and historian Brian Crawford will present an illustrated history of the Bolinas-Fairfax Road. The scenic road has a long and fascinating history intimately tied to the history of Marin County.

Friday, October 11 at 7:00 p.m.
Scandals and Mysteries in Hollywood History, Part II
Jan Wahl will be back with more juicy stories about Hollywood stars, including Hedy Lamarr, Sophia Loren, Kirk Douglas, and Burt Lancaster. Each story will be accompanied by a film clip of the star in a famous role.

Heath Ceramics: The Making of a California Classic
Join us for a screening of a new public television documentary about Edith Heath and Sausalito's own Heath Ceramics, followed by a question and answer period with Heath's new owners, Robin Petravic and Catherine Bailey.

Friday, November 1 at 7:00 p.m.
Samantha Paris: Finding the Bunny
The founder of Sausalito-based Voicetrax, the largest voice-over academy in the nation, will share stories from her recent memoir, which has been optioned by Warner Brothers for development into a television series.

Friday, November 8 at 7:00 p.m.
Chasing Ships: An Inspector's Perspective
Captain Craig Thomas conducts ship inspections in the San Francisco Bay for vessels carrying the flags of Malta, the Marshall Islands, Vanuatu, and Liberia. Join Craig for a unique perspective on ship operations in the Bay Area.

Procraftinators: Crafting for Adults

1:00 to 2:30 p.m. in the Edgewater Room

The Procraftinators crafting meet-up for adults is the perfect place to bring whatever unfinished object
(UFO), craft project or hobby you are working on.  Complete that knitting, embroidery, or jewelry project while socializing with others for encouragement and inspiration. Bring your own supplies, trade with others, or come to learn a new craft. Gather together and create! Drop in any time between 1 and 2:30 p.m.. Free of charge. Open to all experience levels.

death” more likely.  Join us to hear bestselling Mill Valley author Katy Butler discuss The Art of Dying Well, her new handbook of step by step preparations—practical, communal, physical, and spiritual—all designed to help you make the most of your remaining time, be it months, years, or decades. Katy Butler's first book, Knocking on Heaven’s Door, was a New York Times bestseller and Notable Book of the Year. The Art of Dying Well drew record-breaking crowds to her national book tour and was an Amazon bestseller. Katy is a former reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle and a one-time Sausalito houseboat resident. This program is co-sponsored by Sausalito Village.

The Coast Miwok
Tuesday, September 17
7:00 p.m. in the Edgewater Room

Join us for an hour of local history and refreshments hosted by Lucina Vidauri, who traces her lineage back to the Coast Miwok people who lived in Sausalito and Marin for centuries.
The event will feature guest speakers, historical photos, Miwok artifacts, and a visit from descendants of Camillo Ynitia, the last headman of the Miwok community living at Olompali.

Southwestern Indian Pottery
Thursday, September 19
7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers

The pottery of the American Indians of the Southwest is a major art form and a 2,000-year puzzle.  The puzzle is how an art can be hidebound in ancient tradition and at the same
time vital enough to offer new surprises every day. Join Allan Hayes for a fascinating photographic journey through the pottery of the Acoma, Hopi, Zuni, and other tribes, followed by lots of time for questions. Allan Hayes is the author of Southwestern Pottery, Anasazi to Zuni, now in a second edition, and Collections of Southwestern Pottery.

7:00 p.m. inside the Sausalito Library

Past and present Sausalito firefighters will share their reminiscences in this panel discussion presented by the
Sausalito Historical Society.  The panel will feature retired Chief Steve Bogel, current Fire Marshal Fred Hilliard, and former Sausalito firefighters. A portion of the program will also be dedicated to fire prevention in Sausalito. This program coincides with a new exhibit on fires, firemen, firehouses, and fire prevention in Sausalito in the Exhibit Room of the Sausalito Historical Society on the upper level of City Hall. A reception will follow the event.

Paintings by Susan Sternau

5:30 to 7:30 p.m. inside the Sausalito Library

Join us for an opening reception in honor of a new exhibit of paintings by Sausalito artist Susan Sternau.  Susan paints with both oils and
watercolors. In her oils, she strives to create a strong sense of place and to communicate her response to the beauty of California’s landscapes and wildlife, achieving an impressionistic blend of color and lively surface texture. Her watercolors feature local landscapes, flowers, still life, and travel scenes. Her work is currently represented by Studio 333 in Sausalito. He will discuss tools, tips and tricks to help you get the most out of Photos. Jon is a computer consultant who also teaches classes at the libraries in Mill Valley and Tiburon.

Fall to Winter Vegetable Gardening
Thursday, September 26
7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers

Careful planning is an essential part of the fall-winter vegetable garden.  This class will answer your questions as to how and when to harvest
summer crops, how to prepare the soil for planting either seeds or starts for your fall-winter garden, and using seed trays for starting seeds while your garden is still at full bloom. Critical to this process is understanding what varieties of vegetables do well in the winter, what varieties can be started early, and what varieties must be planted by seed in the garden bed after the summer harvest. Presenter Joe Jennings has been a Marin Master Gardener since 2012.

Lauren Bacall was only 19 when she and Humphrey Bogart fell in love on the set of To Have and Have Not.
He was fresh from his success in Casablanca and already on his fourth marriage… but this was Hollywood. Soon they were married, and their romance lasted until Bogie’s death in 1957. Join KALW film critic Peter Robinson for a look at their time together and their classic noir films of the 1940s.
