Good evening. I hope you had a terrific Tuesday.
This week is the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Annual Legislative Conference, a five-day convening in Washington, DC of thought leaders, legislators, grassroots organizers, influencers and celebrities to discuss issues impacting African Americans and the global Black community.
So in tonight's issue I will:
- break down the results of a new survey that shows what issues are most important to Black millennial voters in the 2020 presidential election,
- spotlight social scientist Terrance Woodbury, whose firm HIT Strategies specializes in millennial voter outreach
- and provide a guide to CBC Week events and panels focused around business, economics, and tech.
See you tomorrow.

Study: Student Loan Debt, Criminal Justice Reform, and Cybersecurity are Top Priorities for Black Millennial Voters in 2020
|
|
The Beyond Ideas Group, a Black-owned integrated public affairs company founded by former Obama White House and Treasury appointee Antonio White, has released the results of their inaugural "Black Millennial Economic Perspectives Report." The study offers insights on the financial hopes and fears of Black millennials, and highlights the top policy issues that will influence how we vote in 2020. Here are some key takeaways:
- While healthcare, immigration, and the state of the economy dominate mainstream conversations on top voter issues in 2020, a majority of black millennial voters will choose candidates who address student loan debt, criminal justice reform, and cybersecurity.
Student Loan Debt
- Nearly half of all survey respondents (46%) said student loan debt was the greatest risk to achieving financial stability and the American Dream
- 87% of respondents have some level of student loan debt, with nearly 60% owing over $50K in student loan debt, nearly double the national average
Savings and Wealth
- Only 21% of Black millennials are homeowners
- 79% of Black millennials have some form of credit card debt
- Two-thirds of the respondents anticipate having to care for an aging or retiring parent in the future.
Election 2020
- 94% of respondents plan to vote in the 2020 election.
- 57% said student loan debt solutions was the most important economic issue to them when selecting a 2020 presidential candidate.
- 36% said criminal justice reform was the most important domestic issue
- Nearly 60% indicated cybersecurity was the most important international issues.
