🔎 A record shop’s basement treasures

Our region typically gets only a handful of lightning storms a year, and last weekend's was one to remember! Thanks for using #theevergrey tag on Instagram, Jeff!

What Seattle is talking about

Move over, Microsoft. It’s official: Amazon is now the biggest tech employer in our region, bumping Microsoft off the No. 1 spot.

According to GeekWire, Amazon now employs more than 53,000 people in the Puget Sound area — and roughly 50,000 of those jobs are in Seattle proper. Microsoft has nearly 52,000 employees across Washington.

Amazon isn’t slowing down its growth anytime soon. The tech giant is hosting a multi-city career day next Tuesday to help fill 30,000 open positions, 10,000 of which are in Seattle.

So, despite all the angst over HQ2 and the upcoming re-location of some employees to Bellevue, it appears Amazon isn’t turning its attention away from the Emerald City anytime soon. GeekWire reports the company’s Seattle campus is still growing and expected to surpass 13 million square feet in the next few years.

In the meantime, if you or someone you know is looking for a new gig, the Seattle hiring event takes place at the South Lake Union Discovery Center from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sept. 17.

In other news…

Black women are much more likely to die in childbirth, and a new study from a UW nursing professor seeks to understand why. A survey of 22 women of color who had recently given birth found most experienced interactions with providers that they felt were racist or based on stereotypes. (KNKX)

Blue C Sushi once reigned supreme over Seattle’s conveyor-belt sushi scene. It all came crashing down earlier this year, and this long read from Eater is packed with insights on what not to do in the restaurant biz. (Eater)

You never know what you’re going to find in the basement. Easy Street Records owner Matt Vaughan recently uncovered a few Kurt Cobain treasures while doing some rearranging in the basement of the West Seattle record store. (AV Club)

A bit of Seattle sweetness

We’ve got some pretty sweet neighborhoods in Seattle. But what if they were sweeter? We decided to add a little more sugar

Let’s be real: Doughn’t you wish Top Pot would prep a baker’s dozen of Ballards and Central Districts for you?

We’ll be creating more images like this one, so if there’s an item you’d like to see compared to Seattle neighborhoods, send an email to our resident illustrator, Haley Weaver.
