➸ Detail of Megan Gibes' interpretation of the Ephemera book cover

Hello *|HTML:FNAME|*,
I'm in my studio right now and my fingers are so cold I can barely type! There's no heat since the landlord hasn't activated the building's boiler yet this season. The building is over a hundred years old, and I think they're always afraid to fire everything up! I'm wrapped in a scarf and drinking tea...
Speaking of old things... Ephemera! With each release of the UPPERCASE Encyclopedia of Inspiration, bookbinder Todd Pattison organizes a fresh batch of bookbinders who use unbound signatures of my book to create their own interpretations. You can view Feed Sacks, Print/Maker and now Ephemera. Here's Debra Frances' process:

|
She writes, "The cover design was inspired by one of the collections found in the book that immediately caught my eye – an old slatted cupboard door plastered with various colourful bits of ephemera."
Check out Jim Croft at work! "Jim Croft is a modern-day medieval bookbinder. He makes his bindings using raw materials, from cutting down the tree and processing the wood for the boards to tanning the skins used for covering. For the binding of Ephemera Jim made a traditional fifteenth-century binding that will last for centuries while adding some artistic touches."

Eileen Wallace's design is perhaps closest to my aesthetic. The motif of an old Dennison label has been part of UPPERCASE magazine since the first issue. "For my binding of Ephemera, I used selections from my collection of vintage ephemera. The book cover is constructed using Reyburn’s “Gummed Black Cloth Mending Tape” adhered to vintage black pressboard that is reminiscent of an office folder or photo album. The binding is a simple and straightforward non-adhesive longstitch structure that allows room to store my own ephemera within the pages of the book. The title is typed onto a Dennison gummed label bordered in red and it is signed by using a payment book remittance slip that marks the month and year of the binding onto the entry for “Payment No. 19”."

Explore all the creative bindings on the Ephemera Binding website. Thanks, Todd!
To purchase your own copy of Ephemera, they're available in my shop and come with a large dust jacket that can be customized in 4 different ways. (Or you could fashion your own unique book wrap with old ephemera from your collection.) We can look forward to a new batch of bookbinders' interpretations of Vintage Life over the next while. (Todd's wife, Sharon's collection of Chocolate Box book bindings are featured within. Visit the couple's website for Pattison Paperworks.)
May I suggest this perfect pairing? Vintage Life and Ephemera go so well together!
