 Academic Year 2019/20  13/09/2019
Dear Parents

Term is well and truly underway now and we hope you and your children feel things are going well.

Sixth Form Prize Giving

It appeared that everyone thoroughly enjoyed last night's Prize Giving, which saw the return of the leavers of 2019 who had achieved such excellent A Level results. It was lovely to see them before they depart for a host of different university destinations and courses and to hear them sing their schools songs as a whole group for (probably) the last time.

Our guest speaker, old boy of BGS and BAFTA award winning documentary maker Mr Paul Kenyon, gave what was widely considered among the student body to be one of the best speeches they have ever heard. He entertained us with stories of far gone places and immense bravery while underlining the message that it is good to be different, think for yourself and value education. He also spoke most movingly about the warmth he felt at Bury Grammar as a boy and still feels in the school today. We were delighted Paul came back to talk to the Sixth Form once more in assembly this morning and would like to thank him for his entertaining and thought provoking talks. You know a speech is good when it leaves you wanting more!

Victoria Wood Exhibition at Bury Art Gallery 'Thanks for the laughs'

We are thrilled to be involved in an exciting collaboration with Bury Art Gallery from Saturday September 21st, which will display the work of our children and celebrate memories of Victoria Wood. The brainchild of Kiri Gore, Director of Arts and Culture at BGS, this promises to be an exhibition which captures the interest of both fans of Victoria Wood and supporters of Bury and the Grammar School. Your children are bringing home a flyer for this today.

Academic standards

Bury Grammar School is first and foremast about promoting an excellent education. Please find here an important letter from Mrs Victoria Leaver, Assistant Principal and Director of Academic Provision, about homework and academic standards.

Enrichment

Part of our commitment to providing a top quality education is our provision for extra-curricular activities. We would wholeheartedly encourage all our pupils to get thoroughly involved and make the most of all that BGS has to offer (which is a lot!).

Please find below the links for the enrichment timetables for Infant, Junior and Senior Schools, which you may wish to discuss with your daughter/son.

Communication with you as parents

We have had lots of positive feedback (thank you!) about the Parent Portal, recent welcome/information evenings and ‘Show my Homework’. If you have any comments at all to pass on to us so we can make our communications even better, please do not hesitate to let us know.

A reminder that your son’s /daughter’s form tutor (Seniors) or class teachers (Juniors and Infants) would always be your first port of call for you discuss your child’s progress or welfare.

We hope you have a good week ahead,
