You've probably heard about the devastating fires in the region over the past week. It started on Friday night with a fire burning near Stanthorpe that singed the edge of town and then burnt through the hills behind the high school. It crossed the highway several times. Three houses were lost and many other structures. The Rural Fire Brigade did an amazing job saving more from being damaged.

Then on Monday afternoon, a fire started right across the road from us here at Ballandean. Luckily there were so many firefighters still in the region and the water-bombing aircraft could act immediately. It was blowing away from us, and thankfully the fire brigade was able to get it under control again before any houses were lost.
Our community had an amazing response with people helping those who had to evacuate and those who lost houses, and volunteers setting up cooking stations to feed the firefighters and emergency services.
Our volunteer firefighters are such amazing people. They haven't slept much in the past week and they take time out of their own businesses and jobs and farms to defend the community. If you'd like to donate to support our firefighters (they are not fully government-funded) you can donate via the Rural Fire Brigades Association website.
Many thanks to our local Ballandean brigade leader Graham Parker for your hard work over the last few days. Graham happens to be using some of his recovery time today to print our labels for Eco Expo - his day job.
