Growth in District 196 enrollment shared with School Board
During the Sept. 9 School Board meeting, the board reviewed initial enrollment figures that show the district continues to grow. On the first day of school, staff welcomed 29,055 students. This total includes:
  • Over 570 3- and 4-year-old Connections Preschool students (an additional 374 participate in Early Childhood Special Education Program);
  • 12,423 kindergarten through fifth-graders;
  • 6,669 middle school students;
  • 8,789 high school students;
  • 110 students attending Dakota Ridge School, and
  • 120 students attending the Transition Plus program.
Early estimates show districtwide attendance to be up about 200 students from the 2018-19 school year, with official figures to be calculated on Oct. 1. Among other things at the Sept. 9 meeting the board:
  • Recognized the Finance Department for earning a meritorious budget award for excellence in budgeting for 2019-20 from The Association of School Business Officials International, and 
  • Received an update about the newly-launched "Here Comes The Bus" smartphone application.

More than 750 District 196 student earn AP Scholar honors
The College Board recognized 766 District 196 high school students for their performance on Advanced Placement (AP) course exams taken during the 2018-19 school year.

District 196 high schools offer 24 different AP courses which have been audited and approved by the College Board, a nonprofit organization of colleges, universities, secondary schools and higher education institutions focused on college readiness programs. Students who complete an AP course can take an optional exam and earn college credit, depending on their score on the exam and admission requirements at the college or university they attend. An AP exam score of 3 or higher (on a scale of 1 to 5) earns credit at many of the nation’s colleges and universities. Read more...

District 196 District Service Center address forwarding grace period ending
In January 2019, the city of Apple Valley and United States Postal Service implemented new street addresses for the District Service Center (DSC) and Facilities and Grounds building, as written below (DSC is not the District Office). The reason for the change is to better direct visitors and emergency personnel to the correct buildings, which previously shared the same address.

The mail forwarding grace period is coming to an end later this month. As of September 30, the Post Office will no longer forward any mail addressed to the old District Service Center address. Please update your addresses with correct information below:

District 196 communities are among lowest taxed large cities in Minnesota
Of the 31 Minnesota cities with populations of 30,000 or greater in 2019, the four with the lowest tax rates are all District 196 communities and a fifth is in the lowest 10.
 
According to fiscal year 2019 county net tax capacity reports for Minnesota counties with at least one city of 30,000 residents or more, the 10 cities with the lowest tax rates are (District 196 communities in bold): 1. Eagan(lowest); 2. Apple Valley; 3. Lakeville; 4. Burnsville; 5. Woodbury; 6. Plymouth; 7. Edina; 8. Mankato; 9. Cottage Grove, and 10. Inver Grove Heights. Rates include total taxes (county, city and school district) for residential and commercial property.
 
The other two cities in District 196, Rosemount and Coates, do not have 30,000 population.
