PTSA VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The Barlow PTSA is eager to have parents involved with making the JBHS community better for all our students. There are many ways to help, including many tasks that can be done completely from home. We are currently looking to fill the following positions: 

Treasurer “Shadow”: Shadow the current treasurer for the upcoming year and take over the position for ’20-‘21.
Parliamentarian: Ensure PTSA by-laws are available and followed.
Grants: Communicate with Barlow faculty about availability of PTSA grants for enrichiment, projects or activities.
Reflections: Coordinate JBHS’ participation in this nationwide PTSA arts contest.

SPECIAL EDUCATION PARENT ORGANIZATION

Easton and Redding are trying to start a Special Education Parent Organization for support and information disseminating. We need a Barlow parent that would like to partner with the parents from RES, JRMS, SSES and HKMS in this endeavor. Please email LCpranzo@hotmail.com if you are interested.
 

SAFE RIDES

Since the inception of Safe Rides three years ago, we have not had a major car accident in our communities! If your son/daughter would like to volunteer for Safe Rides for the 2019-20 school year, ask them to reach out to one of our Team Captains listed below. Teams are forming now and our orientation meeting will be on Monday, Sept 16th. November early decision deadlines are only weeks away, and January regular decision deadlines, while they may seem distant, will creep up fast. The Writing Center can help! Seniors are encouraged to make an appointment with Mrs. Jarvis, the writing specialist, for guidance, motivation, and support – from conceptualization to refinement to final polish. Students can make an appointment online or by stopping by the Writing Center any time between 7:00 AM - 3:15 PM to schedule one.

JORDAN WRIGHT MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

Coach Jordan Wright did not believe in giving up. He worked hard, taught by example and persevered through incredible adversity. He cherished family, friendships and the Redding Community. Proceeds support both The Jordan Wright Memorial Scholarship Fund and Joel Barlow High School Athletics. The Jordan Wright Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to two deserving JBHS seniors (1 female and 1 male), who in the spirit of Coach Wright have persevered through adversity. The Joel Barlow High School Athletic department will use the proceeds to improve facilities, purchase training equipment and provide opportunities for student athletes

Join Claire Matzke, Master Gardener and owner of The Fine Pruner, and Dana Marker, Master Gardener, for a relaxing and informative morning in our herb and Shakespeare gardens. Claire and Dana will highlight many of the medicinal and culinary uses of our plantings and then share a delicious herbal luncheon and recipes on the balcony of our Learning Center. Registration required, space is limited. SEPTEMBER ASTRONOMY: OBSERVING THE MOON, JUPITER & SATURN

Please join the wonderful team of volunteer astronomers from the Discovery Center at Ridgefield as you look through our telescopes at the Moon’s mountains, craters, and mare (seas), majestic Jupiter with its moons, and Saturn’s beautiful rings. Then view some carbon and double stars as late summer constellations are be pointed out along with the starry Milky Way. Registration required, space is limited. Call the Farm at (203) 938-2117.

C2 EDUCATION'S
SAT/ACT PRACTICE TEST 7 RESULTS  

Saturday, September 28th; 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM
Results: Wednesday, October 2nd; 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM 

Easton Public Library

Get ready for the SAT or ACT with a free practice test. This full-length practice test will give you the chance to see what sitting for the exam will feel like and to 
practice test-taking skills. Students will receive their score reports at the Results Session. Each family will be able to meet briefly with C2 to discuss opportunities for improvement and look at a test-prep plan. Parents should also plan to attend the follow-up. Registration is required for the test & follow-up.

AUTHOR TALK: BARLOW ALUMNI CJ HAUSER

Join us in welcoming back noted author and Joel Barlow graduate C.J.Hauser to discuss her newest novel, Family of Origin, an absurdist meditation on nature vs. nurture centered on estranged half siblings yoked together on a swampy Gulf Coast island after the unexpected death of their biologist father. Hauser, who teaches writing at Colgate University, will share thoughts on creating strong narrators. Copies of her book will be available for sale and signing. 

TOOL BOX FOR PAIN RELIEF

Spend an informative evening with chronic pain specialist Janet Schroeder and learn simple self-care techniques to alleviate pain. Janet offers a unique integrated approach to teaching techniques designed to be done on your own in a home setting. Come dressed to move, with a list of aches and ready to feel better! Back pain, shoulder/neck/arm pain and headaches will be covered in addition to requests.

CLASSICS BOOK CLUB

This group is led by popular leader Catherine Riordan who contributes her love of reading and background in literature to the discussion. The group reads both old and new classic titles. Copies of the latest book will be available at the Library’s front desk.

Bring your own project or learn basic techniques like casting on, and the knit and purl stitches. If you’re new to knitting and want to give it a try, we have a selection of yarn and needles to test out. Registration is not required
