Tip of the month:

Synchronizing Speeds in the Family

We all hear about the fact that things are happening at an ever more frenetic pace these days, and it is certainly true.  Personally, I'm starting to appreciate the benefits of slowing down sometimes, and simply being present.

When working with families, I typically note that not every person moves to the same beat, which is normal.  Sometimes we expect that we can guess what speed people will prefer by their age and the generation they belong to.  And often we are wrong!

When a family is trying to go somewhere, "together", it's sometimes important to slow things down a bit, to let everyone catch up to those who are always running ahead. Part of my job is often to act in the way a tour guide does, making sure we all stay together, sometimes slowing down the faster ones, and sometimes asking the laggards to pick up the pace. It's an important part of my job, because it can be tougher for a family member to play that role.

What's New:

My latest book, Interdependent Wealth, launched in late June, and I've been pleased with the reaction it's getting.  There are already a few nice reviews up on Amazon.com and on Amazon.ca, and I would love to see more like those.

Any author will tell you that good Amazon reviews are the best gift you can receive, so if you have nice things to say about my book, why not share them with everyone?

Thanks in advance for those who oblige this request!

FFI Faculty for 2020

I am pleased and proud to report that I have been added to the Family Firm Institute's Faculty for the delivery of their GEN program (Global Education Network).

I will be one of the new instructors for "GEN 502" which is called,

GEN 502: Family Governance in the Family Enterprise: A key structural element in family enterprise governance

Sounds like it's right up my alley, and I'm looking forward to starting. Honoured to be following in the footsteps of Dennis Jaffe and Kirby Rosplock, friends and highly respected colleagues whose shoes I hope to fill adequately.

Blog of the Month:

Choosing the best title for a blog post can be “hit and miss” at times, as I’ve learned over the past 350 weeks or so (!)

Today’s topic sounded a bit lame when I looked at my notes, so I kicked around some headline alternatives to add some punch.

On the surface, the main subject seems a bit basic, but it’s so important that I felt the need to address it again in this space.

And I felt like I needed to try to find a way to make it stand out, hence the alliterative title I chose.
