This Month's Activity - This Saturday at 2pm, Park Walk with the Natural Heritage Service

Meet at The Bothy, 26b Gilmerton Dykes Street

This month we will be doing a walk through the park with the Natural Heritage Service. We're currently reviweing all our activities and the management plan for the park. This walk will be an open discussion about ideas and priorities for making the park better for people and wildlife.

All the information will be analysed afterwards and our future activities and our work with the council will be directly influenced by Saturday's discussion. We will be handing out some litter pickers - well, it would be rude not to help keep the park clean en route, so there will be very light activity too.

So, come along and you can meet Jessica Morgado and Andrew Law from the council and you can help shape future improvements and activities.

Herbal and Foraging Walk - October 10th

Next month we have a great activity planned with a Herbal and Foraging Walk. Lots to learn about what is and is not edible in the local area. Check the poster for details of both events.

Doors Open Day - 28th September at 10am, meeting at the Bothy and finishing in Ellen's Glen
This year is our first foray into the fantastic 'Doors Open Day', which is organised by the equally fantastic Cockburn Association. We have rorganised a walk on Saturday the 28th September beginning at 10am and finishing around lunchtime. The walk is on the theme of local history and will provide some insight and highlights about the history of the park and the local community. It will feature information about Gilmerton Cove, the Limestone Mines and of course the tragic story of the 'Stenhouse Witches' - Mandy Rathjen and Fran Humphrey have been swotting up on the subject.

'Doors Open' is one of the great events that takes place in Edinburgh each year and there are nearly 150 venues with a spectacular array of amazing places to experience - and it's all free, so check out the brochure for more details. Many thanks to the Cockburn Association for all its help.

Pentlands to the Sea - Major Campaign Launched to Support Pathway Proposals

The attached story from the Evening News says it all, but one of our most ambitious projects has made a huge leap forward. The proposals for a walkway from the Pentlands to the sea were first muted back in the 1940s when the initial suggestion for the Water of Leith walkway was put forward as well as walkways beside the other watercourses in the city. The idea was also pushed by founder of the Better Burdiehouse Burn Initiative and local resident Tam Anderson, who first walked the route to show it was viable way back in the early 90s.

In more recent years we had great support from former Councillor Keith Robson who pushed the idea very hard, and there's support from amongst our current councillors. However, we've just made a huge breakthrough. Thanks to support from Edinburgh and Lothians Greenspace Trust funding was secured for a feasibility study which has now been carried out. It shows route options and provides a strong focus for taking the project forward. Sustrans has been instrumental in taking the project forward ane we're very grateful for their support also. Claire Daly, Policy and Communications Manager was along to support the launch as well.

The campaign was launched at Burdiehouse Drive by local Councillor Lesley Macinnes who is Convener of the Transport and Environment Committee on the Council. She was joined by kids from the local Bike Club organised by Edinburgh and Lothians Greenspace Trust. It was great way to start  the campaign.

The Bike Club has also been a great success, and not only have 25 kids signed up to the bike club but there's a waiting list too. It's brilliant, and just look at the kids queuing to get in the park at the launch.  Big thanks to all involved and to the Edinburgh Evening News for its support. This is an important campaign and if you want details of the feasibility study send us an email through our website (below) and we'll forward you details.

The Kids are Alright - Local Cubs Clean Up

Whether it's the kids that come along to our regular activities, the kids at Moredun cleaning up, the 93rd Edinburgh Guides who are helping in the park or whether it's the the Liberton Cubs who have just been out to clean up the park, we think kids are just wonderful. The Cubs started at the Gilmerton Road end and did a wonderful job. Despite our biggest ever Spring Clean we can report that there was plenty of litter for them to clear up. Notable were the remnants of drinking sessions in the park. This has been an issue for some time, so remember and report any problems on the link below.

Meantime celebrate just how wonderful most young people are and how much good work they all do. A great credit to their parents and to the local community.

Wildlife Corner - Gracemount's Hidden Gem

We often brag about our Wildflower Meadow, but local community activist Brian Rodgers was quick to proclaim the Wildflower Meadow in Gracemount Walled Garden even better. We might take issue with that, but we'd prefer to say how wonderful they both are. Well done all involved at Gracemount Walled Garden for all their hard work. It's truly a hidden gem. Checkout the Gracemount Grow Stronger Facebook page for more details of ongoing activities.
