USC: Baylor AD Rhoades on his name being mentioned for the Trojans' opening, "I'm not leaving." (link); SBJ's Smith says university leaders wanted to have a new AD ready to announce once former AD Swann's exit was put in motion, "But the longer USC searched with Swann still in the chair, it became a bad look. Time to go ahead and open the position now." Smith thinks the opportunity is a still a Top 10, "maybe top five" AD chair in the nation. (link); Stadium's McMurphy: "Individuals on USC’s behalf reached out to 'at least a half dozen' Power 5 ADs in past few weeks but none were interested in the USC job." (link); LA Times headliner Plaschke: "The cronyism has to stop. The jock mentality has to end. The preference given to someone simply because they attended USC cannot continue. The ideal candidate for this position would appear to be one who doesn’t necessarily know the school, but knows the job. The university doesn’t need a sports guru, it needs a business guru. It doesn’t need a coach, it needs a chief executive. This ultimate insider school should, for once, crave the viewpoint of an outsider." (link)
Fair Pay to Play: It's all political theatre, but check out this zinger from California State Senator Kamlager-Dove, "I just want to say, 'NCAA, don't threaten California. Don't threaten us.' Because we have formidable schools. We have formidable alumni. And we have formidable viewership. And we can leverage those things until 2023, when this bill takes effect. I'm sick of being leveraged by the NCAA on the backs of athletes who have the right to their own name and image." (link); The NCAA releases a statement, "The NCAA Board of Governors has monitored SB 2016 as it has moved through the California legislative process. As we evaluate our next steps, we remain focused on providing opportunities and a level playing field for the nearly half a million student-athletes nationwide." (link); USA Today's Wolken: "At some point, somewhere along the line, perhaps a judge won’t be as favorable. But if you’re the NCAA or a group of colleges who want to maintain the status quo. why wouldn’t you test California’s law in court and see if it holds up? […] Given how much the NCAA has invested over the years in restricting athletes from earning a bigger share of the largesse college sports has created, there’s no way it’s going to give up on its beloved amateurism this easily." (link); Sports Illustrated legal expert McCann dives in, "The NCAA would argue that the Act unduly interferes with commerce in a way that Congress has not authorized. The NCAA would also contend that unless the Act is stopped by a court, it would force the NCAA to either change its core rules to adhere to the demands of one state or terminate its relationship with California colleges." More. (link)
By all accounts it's a long shot, but the NCAA is pushing for federal legislation of sports gambling with Senators Schumer (D - NY) & Romney (R - UT) behind the cause. NCAA VP of Hearing Operations Stevenson Starks: "The Supreme Court, in its decision, has made it somewhat challenging for a complete carve-out on college athletics to not be something that would be legally challenged at the end of the day. Certainly, if there were the ability to have some kind of carve-out on college athletics altogether, that would be something that I know most would be supportive of. Whether or not that would be something that the federal legislation that's being proposed would do, given that states are already doing it, I think that might be a challenge for the bill potentially get passed, which is the ultimate goal." (link)
Mountain West FB squads have defeated six 'Power 5' programs in the first two-plus weeks of the season & Commish Thompson points to significant parity beyond the Top 10 teams in the nation, "There’s maybe 40 to 50 teams that can win 10 or 11 games, depending on how it goes. I would say we have maybe a half-dozen that can win at that level." Boise State HC Harsin: "Everybody’s surprised you went out and beat a Power 5 team and all that, but think about the kind of players that are coming out, all the teams. Not just Group of 5, Power 5, there’s good players everywhere." (link)
Boise State unveils its #BroncoBOLD mental health awareness initiative designed to 1) Reduce stigma ("We will create a culture of help-seeking and inclusion through personal stories and messages of strength. Collectively, we will normalize conversations around mental health and reduce stigma."); 2) Raise awareness ("We will grow awareness and knowledge of mental health issues through such forums as social media, workshops and sponsored events and athletic competitions."); and 3) Cultivate resiliency ("...utilize a strengths-based approach, emphasizing the boldness we all possess. We will share healthy coping skills, engage support systems, and use our internal and external resources."). (link)
Notable sports media personality @SportsByBrooks, "All due respect but I have personally confirmed through multiple sources very close to the situation that there was no air conditioning in the LSU locker room and - for what it's worth - there were also no towels. Really is shameful - Texas knowingly created an unsafe situation." (link); Georgia FB HC Smart asked about visiting locker room conditions around the SEC, "...y'all should go around and do a story. Because there's not very good locker rooms in the SEC on the road. They're mostly old '60s and '70s locker rooms from stadium to stadium. It's be a nice little story some of the places I've been to, and the dungeons you've been to. [...] They're not very nice. That's just the way it is." (link)
Arkansas AD Yuracheck promotes Senior Assoc. AD Ratcliffe to Deputy AD of Student-Athlete Wellness/SWA. Longtime leader Fagg now Deputy AD for Academics, Integrity and Student-Athlete Development, will also serve as sport administrator for FB. Director of Administration Davenport up to Chief of Staff. (link); Hogs MBB HC Musselman has finalized his contract in Fayetteville, which includes a buyout of $5M if he exits before May of 2021 (5x what the Razorbacks paid to get Musselman from Nevada). $2.5M base pay, two automatic one-year extensions with NCAA Tournament appearances + $100K raises, "fired for convenience" = 70% of remaining total compensation. More. (link)
St. Mary's AD Matoso with a list of promotions: Senior Assoc. AD for External Reggiani to Deputy AD, same with Senior Assoc. AD for Finance & Student-Athlete Services/SWA Gray. Advancement leader Carroll up to the Senior Assoc. AD line. Assoc. AD for Compliance for Monitoring & Education Brewster bumped to Senior Assoc., Asst. AD for Student Services Montero to Assoc. AD, Asst. AD for Student Services Byrne now Assoc. AD for Academic Support, Director of Event Management Arnold to Assoc. AD & Asst. AD for Facilities Holden also with the Assoc. AD title. (link); Over at Southern Utah, Assoc. AD for Compliance Brown up to Deputy AD/Director of Sports Medicine, Asst. AD for Ticket Revenue Spevak now Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Revenue Generation. (link)
More Personnel: Former Adidas consultant Gassnola avoids a prison sentence by cooperating with the feds, instead gets a one-year supervised release, two months of home confinement and electronic monitoring and a $100 fine for his role in the MBB-FBI developments. (link); Cal Poly's new Assoc. AD for Compliance/SWA is former Big 12 Asst. Commish of Compliance Mendoza. (link); New Mexico FB HC Davie says he will "absolutely" come back as HC of the Lobos. (link); North Alabama WBB HC Tiber gets an extension through the 2023-24 season. (link)
Former Louisville MBB HC Pitino was back in the Derby City yesterday for nine hours of settlement talks in his lawsuit against the university. No resolution yet. From the Courier-Journal, "With U of L trustee and ULAA member James Rogers in attendance, along with athletic director Vince Tyra, the university was well represented by experienced deal makers. Yet (UofL spokesman) Karman said Rogers was not authorized to make a deal independently. Another university board member said he could not imagine a deal getting done considering 'how far apart they are.'" (link)
D1Baseball's Rogers points to "shenanigans" with the ACC's previous vote on the third full-time Baseball AC that got us to where we are today. More, "...should the D1 Council vote to reconsider the legislation, it could happen on October 17/18, Jan or April." (link)
The latest headlining carriage dispute is between AT&T & Disney, meaning AT&T & DirecTV subscribers could lose access to the ESPN family of networks in the coming days. (link); ESPN EVP for Programming & Scheduling Magnus via Twitter, "CFB viewership through Week 2 (season-to-date) is up on every Disney network. ABC  +29%, ABC (SNF)  +98%, ESPN  +3%, ESPN2  +4%, ESPNU  +23%, ESPNEWS  +573%, Combined All Nets  +41%." (link)
Mississippi State AD Cohen none too pleased with concessions service at the Bulldogs' home FB opener last weekend, holds his tongue on saying more about Aramark, simply states, "We had some very, very lengthy, good, frank discussions about concessions this past week, and I think you're going to see drastic improvements in that." Cohen even implied that staff members rolled up their sleeves & started serving customers when the lines got long. Three of the 17 concession locations were unstaffed. (link)
Wisconsin's FB season ticket packages are down 2% from last year with a net loss of 1,391 packages. Still a season ticket base of 65,149 for the 80,321-seat Camp Randall Stadium and a renewal rate of 94.5%. Saturday's 74,437 against Central Michigan marked the second-smallest attendance for a Badgers home-opener in the past 22 years. Senior Assoc. AD Doherty: "We certainly want to sell every ticket, and we’re continuing to work to do that. But we think we have one of, if not the best fan base in the country, and to have those high numbers like that, I think especially in comparison to a lot of schools, is a credit to the loyalty of the fans here." Lots more numbers here, including a 3.9% uptick in suites and club sales. (link)
Clemson expands its partnership with Teamworks beyond the initial 10 programs that were using the platform. Tigers AD Radakovich: "For department success, we are committed to finding tools that help connect people, and Teamworks does that better than anyone.  Communication can happen in other ways, but it can be disjointed.  The consistency and reliability of Teamworks ensures we’re all on the same page." (link); Paciolan inks Georgia to an extension. No deal details provided. (link)
The Hawaii Tourism Authority is spending $50K to pay for some of Hawaii FB's travel expenses as the squad heads to Seattle for this weekend's matchup at Washington. The money will also go toward "several events around the big game to help market the Aloha Spirit." HTA Prez/CEO Tatum: "Seattle is a great market for us. We’re going to support bringing the cheerleaders out, bringing the Hawaiian Serenaders out, and for the game, we’re bringing all the ti leaves in for all the people that are attending to show our support for the warriors." If successful, Senate Tourism Committee chair Wakai says the state should consider similar plays at other big Hawaii markets, such as Portland, Los Angeles and San Francisco. (link)
