I am happy to report that CREP is enjoying acknowledgement for the years of hard work carving out best practices and enhancing recognition for registered exercise professionals.  Our successes span across all registered professionals. In strength and conditioning, CREP has provided guidance and leadership to the Intercollegiate Council on Sports Medicine task force for student athlete safety by developing research-based recommendations for the NCAA regarding optimal practices, injury reporting, education standards, and the credentialing for strength coaches. Pilates has started down the road of collegial communications with partner registers considering evolving to the comprehensive level. For the personal trainer and group instructors, new standards are being released that represent a global view of the job role and what it takes to be qualified as a professional at those registration levels. CREP is also working with IHRSA and the World Health Organization to promote UFIT, a global movement toward achieving broader inclusiveness in health and fitness for all. As part of this partnership, CREP will participate in the release of the new global standards at the International Confederation of Registers for Exercise Professionals’ (ICREPs) Fall meeting. Exciting times with more to come – stay informed.

The CSCCa will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2020.  Since its inception, the CSCCa has been dedicated to meeting the needs of strength and conditioning coaches of collegiate and professional athletic teams.  Recently, the organization has been involved in a variety of exciting projects.
  • Updated CSCCa Website
  • Released “The Professional’s Guide to Strength & Conditioning: Safe and Effective Principles for Maximizing Athletic Performance” textbook to be utilized in colleges and universities as part of their strength and conditioning curriculum, as well as to be utilized as a study resource to prepare for the organization’s certification—Strength & Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC).
  • Developed CSCCa and NSCA Joint Consensus Guidelines for Transition Periods: Safe Return to Training Following Inactivity.  The document which provides valuable guidelines to be utilized by strength and conditioning coaches in their training of new athletes and returning athletes as they come back from a break of two weeks or longer.  The majority of serious injuries and athlete deaths that occurred over the past few years have taken place during these “transition periods.”  The document was recently published in the June 2019 issue of the NSCA Strength & Conditioning Journal.  We truly believe this is a landmark document as it is the first of its kind with specific formulas that can be utilized to determine safe and appropriate volume and intensity during transition periods.
  • The CSCCa has developed a health and safety curriculum which covers the following areas: concussions, exertional rhabdomyolysis, exertional heat illness, respiratory illness, cardiovascular illness, sickle cell trait, emergency action plans (EAP).
The CSCCa Certification Commission approved in 2017 to require a bachelor’s or master’s degree in exercise science or a related field, effective August 1, 2019, as a prerequisite for sitting for the SCCC certification examination.

Staff Development – A Strategic Investment for Health Clubs

ACE is working hard to educate health clubs and fitness facilities on the value and potential impact on revenue and member retention of investing in the development of their staffs, far more than has been typical for this industry. We’re familiar with the reluctance – naturally, employers don’t love investing in workforces where turnover is high.  Yet the data shows it still makes smart business sense. Touted as a strategic tool with a strong business case by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), investing in staff development offers organizations, including health clubs, the following benefits:

·       Increased tenure, reduced turnover. According to findings from the 2019 IHRSA Health Club Employee Compensation and Benefits Report, health clubs have a high turnover rate of 24% on average. To reduce turnover, health clubs can offer staff development opportunities, which keep employees engaged and demonstrate employees are valued. As an added bonus, with less time spent on staff recruitment and onboarding due to lower turnover, health clubs have more time to focus on the strategic growth of their organization.

·       Enhanced competitive edge. Companies eager to remain competitive should consider using staff development to upskill employees in areas that align with their strategic plans; the same is true for health clubs. For example, if a facility seeks to expand their services to include health coaching, the facility should encourage interested and qualified employees to obtain a health coach certification through the facility’s staff development program.

·       Attract top job applicants. To attract the best talent, organizations need to show how they outshine other employers. Organizations that offer staff development and educational offerings are vastly more competitive in attracting top talent. This may be particularly true among health clubs; the 2019 IHRSA Health Club Employee Compensation and Benefits Report reveals that more than 40% of health club employees did not have access to an educational assistance program.

·       Improved services for customers. Staff who receive regular training and education are better informed. They are aware and understand the latest industry trends and leading research, knowledge that can then be transferred and applied when these employees work with their clients and deliver revenue and other member programs.

The NCSF Board for Certification recently released the new edition of its Certified Personal Trainer credential. This freshly updated program has a new e-learning platform, textbook and applications to complement the new exam forms developed from the 2018 Job Task Analysis. The program additions include new evaluation protocols, the most recent recommendations and guidelines, along with the most current research-backed programming information available. In compliance with NCCA accreditation, the organization has also recently submitted all development data to the NCCA accreditation commission for re-accreditation for 2020.

NCSF executive director and CREP president, Dr. Brian Biagioli, recently presented portions of the NCSF Strength Coach program to coaches from the Federation of International Basketball Associations (FIBA) in Italy. The information on injury prevention and training was presented to the more than 70 international coaches as part of a 3-year certificate program sponsored by FIBA-EUROPE. In other collaborations in strength and conditioning, the organization is currently working with other CREP members and the Committee on Accreditation for Exercise Science education programs to develop a track in strength and conditioning for college and university program accreditation. This addition will reflect the committee’s commitment to proper competency development for professional roles in health, fitness and performance. The CoAES currently provides accreditation for other roles in the register, including the personal trainer and clinical exercise specialist. USREPS credentials support the CoAES foundations for college education curriculum in exercise science and represent important distinctions from others in the industry; providing consumers with improved confidence in hiring not only a certified, but registered professional.
