Sexual Misconduct Training

The University of Montevallo is required to provide annual sexual misconduct training to faculty and staff. UM has partnered with 3rd Millennium to provide this year’s training through a specific training module in an online format. This training module is now available to all employees. If you are a new hire or have not completed the training, you will soon receive an email message directly from 3rd Millennium. Please click the link provided in the email and follow the log-in instructions and you will be entered into your sexual misconduct training for the year. A record of your completion will be sent to Human Resources and placed in your personnel file.

Toolbox Talk: Improving Your Exams

The Malone Center’s September Toolbox Talk will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 18, at noon in Wills 200. This month’s topic is “Improving Your Exams.” Faculty know that assessment is critical for both measuring and driving learning, but its effectiveness hinges on the validity and reliability of the assessment instrument. During this workshop you will learn tips for creating more valid and robust exams as well as techniques for analyzing the effectiveness of your exams. You will also be introduced to the new Scantron Remark Classroom software that is available campus-wide for test item analysis of multiple-choice exams. Lunch will be provided for participants who register online by 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13.

 

Empathy and Empowerment Through Discourse

The Office of Partnerships and Outreach is excited to offer a free professional learning workshop: Empathy and Empowerment Through Discourse. Learn how to cultivate student empathy and empower young voices through discourse and classroom debates. In this interactive workshop, participants will hear from Birmingham civil rights advocate Lisa McNair and Elizabeth Wood-Weas, director of speech and debate for Mountain Brook Schools.

This workshop includes:

• Q&A with Ms. McNair
• Panel discussion on diversity and inclusion in the classroom with UM faculty, staff, students and other guests
• Presentation led by Ms. Wood-Weas teaching creative ways discourse can be used in any middle or high school class
• Adaptable lesson plans to facilitate classroom learning that builds listening and speaking skills while boosting overall student confidence

The workshop will be held Thursday, Sept. 19, from 1 to 4 p.m. in Anna Irvin Dining Hall. Check-in and networking begin at 12:30 p.m.

Faculty Sabbatical Leave

The Faculty Development Advisory Committee (FDAC) is accepting applications for sabbatical leave. Sabbatical leave provides faculty with opportunities for professional development, scholarly pursuits and professional and intellectual renewal. The deadline for submission for Fall 2020 or Spring 2021 leave is 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27. More information about sabbatical leave and a link to the application form can be found on the FDAC webpage. Questions may be directed to FDAC co-chairs Dr. Ray Ozley and Dr. Heather Tinsley. Please note, a cover sheet containing signatures of the Department Chair and College Dean is required for submission.

 

UM Green Fund Call for Proposals

Did you know that the University of Montevallo was the first college in Alabama to have a green fund? The UM Green Fund is a pool of money used to provide grants for campus projects that improve sustainability, decrease our ecological footprint and educate the University and local communities about sustainable practices, environmental issues and caring for the planet. The Green Fund has $30,000 available! Any member of the UM community, including students and student groups, can write a Green Fund grant proposal.

Application guidelines are available by request. Contact Dr. Susan Caplow for more information. All proposals are due by Tuesday, Oct. 1.

A drop-in proposal workshop will be held Friday, Sept. 13, between 1 and 4 p.m. in the Tower. Bring your ideas and we’ll answer questions, brainstorm ideas and help you strengthen your proposal before you submit.
 

Faculty Research and Teaching Symposium

The Faculty Research and Teaching Symposium will be held Wednesday, Oct. 9, in the J.A. Brown Room of Carmichael Library. During this event, we will highlight accomplishments of UM faculty in teaching and creative endeavor. The day will feature a keynote address from the 2019-2020 University Scholar as well as short oral presentations, artistic demonstrations and posters. Please consider presenting your scholarly, creative and/or pedagogical project. You may choose to present a 15-minute talk, conduct a 15-minute performance, display an artistic work or present a research poster. Submit your abstract online at this link. The deadline for submission is 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27. Presenters will be notified of their presentation time by Oct. 2.
 

Montevallo Connection Meetings

Please mark your calendars and join Montevallo Connection for its upcoming meetings where you will hear updates and needs from our local principals and teachers at Montevallo Elementary School, Montevallo Middle School and Montevallo High School. This is a great opportunity for your department or your class to determine where you can collaborate and help local students. Meetings for this academic year are scheduled for:
