Here at Terra Incognita Media, we are your reliable source of feminist content in response to the outdoor industry. Here is your weekly dose of "Terra-Bites" -- what we are thinking about, chewing on, and inspired by.

Image Description: Appropriated tipis at Glastonbury, a music festival in England with the words "JUST NO" superimposed over the image along with our Terra Incognita Media logo.

Festivals that are founded on aesthetics and commodity alone under the guise of “spirituality” and “community” belong in the trash. Glastonbury, Wilderness Festival, and Coachella, to name only a few, are cesspools of cultural appropriation, transphobia, and anti-Blackness. It’s hard to find festivals that are *not* all about exploitation and profit. We manged to find a few, but if you know of any others please send us a message so we can help spread the word!

Outdoor Refuge Festival is Coming Up!!

There are lots of alternatives if you don’t want to spend two month’s worth of rent on a festival founded by a man who is anti-gay, anti-abortion, and pro-gun. Here are some quality, equity-minded festivals, conferences, and events run by people of integrity and ethics:

PGM ONE

Refuge Outdoor Festival

Resilience Conference

Joshua Tree Zine Fest

Attend Action Days in Support of Lead2Life

Attend a Direct Action Camp hosted by IP3 (Indigenous Peoples Power Project)

Register for this All Women Climb on Mount Kilimanjaro through Peak Explorations. This trip supports The Porter Voice Collective.

You could attend or donate to the Queer Appalachia Harm Reduction Tour. (We talk more about this below).

And whatever you do, be sure to avoid this conference at all costs. Here’s why

Queer Appalachia is banishing stereotypes of the rural south. On their website QA explains, "The concept of Identity throughout Appalachia and the South is complex and nuanced. One person might identify as a hillbilly, while another person from the same community may be offended by that very label. We are all in the process of defining, refining, and reclaiming our identities. We welcome anyone to join us and get involved in this project."

Their platform was catalyzed in response to the white-washing of narratives in mainstream media about the South. Queer Appalachia is dedicated to highlighting the LGBTQ2IA+ community, particularly Queer, trans, people of color.

They share resources with the goal of collective liberation, community, transparency, and accountability. They are committed to hard conversations about race, gender, and class and we LOVE them for it!
Don't miss the Queer Appalachia Harm Reduction Tour if you are in the area!!!
Have you heard of "All My Relations" Podcast?

All My Relations is a podcast hosted by Matika Wilbur (Swinomish and Tulalip) and Dr. Adrienne Keene (Cherokee Nation). From their website the two describe AMR podcast as a platform "...to explore our relationships— relationships to land, to our creatural relatives, and to one another. Each episode invites guests to delve into a different topic facing Native peoples today as we keep it real, play games, laugh a lot, and even cry sometimes. We invite you to join us!"

We hope you enjoyed this week's newsletter and found out about something new! If you have any feedback, or want to be informed about something specific, we'd love to hear your questions, thoughts, or ideas!
