WHAT TO EXPECT
I am SO EXCITED about this Sunday and the new series we are beginning: “Deep Roots: Parenting for the Common Good.” On any given Sunday morning I look out upon a variety of faces of people who share the experience of being a parent, but who are all across the parenting continuum -- parents of young children; parents who have just taken their last kid to college; parents of children long grown; parents of children who are now becoming “parents” to their aging parents. And these faces the full continuum of feelings -- fear, anxiety, exhaustion, success, failure, happiness, and joy. Behind these faces are a diverse variety of parenting philosophies from a hands off approach (“fix your own breakfast that is what cereal is for”) to the “supportive parent” (“Child, I am here to help you navigate the choices you make in life because it is YOUR life”) to the “hovering parent” ("I will call you and wake you up so you can make it to your morning college class") to the “snowplow parent” (e.g. celebrity parents who bribe their child’s admission into prestigious colleges). Thanks to Amy, known as the Ishgirl, for this image with its delightful caption: “Move over helicopter there is a new snowplow in town.” (If you are a parent of a teenager, check out her podcast: “Connection, Not Perfection.” )
Regardless of where you are on the parenting continuum, I believe there is something this Sunday that you will find of value whatever parenting state you are in and wherever you may be in your journey of faith. We will gather around a whimsical vignette of the parenting stages, hear a wonderful mashup of parenthood songs that Nate has composed, hear a deeply moving parenting story from one of our new members. We will turn to the famous story of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15) and I will share a reflection called “I’m Pretty Sure God Isn’t a Helicopter Parent.” Be sure to scroll down to look at the new Parables of Parenting study Lindsey is launching this Sunday at 9:15 a.m. Folks, parenting is a joy. But let’s be real: it is hard. Why go it alone? Come, gather around the larger family table and be supported and get some tips.
This Sunday as we begin our series on parenting, Nate has prepared a mashup of songs about parenting that he will present with Nora and the praise band instrumentalists. The choir will also join us in worship, singing the beautiful anthem “The Road Home”. Join us on Sunday for John’s words and some inspired music!

New parenting and faith formation series
STARTS THIS SUNDAY!
Join us at 9:15 a.m.
Parenting is a journey, not an event. Even if you do not have children of your own, we all recognize how important it is that we pass along our faith to the children around us...but where do we begin? How do we navigate the technical decisions of parenting while keeping the end goal of raising faithful, responsible, and caring children? How do we as a community of faith support families during a challenging time when so many feel isolated as a result of the business of life? Join us for a new Bible Study titled: Parables of Parenting. Learn more below and join us Sunday mornings this fall!
For this Bible Study/Parenting Workshop, there is absolutely nothing to prepare, all you need is your Bible! Then, come join us for lively discussion and some great coffee! While the parents meet, kids are invited to attend Kids Music and Drama upstairs in the music room with Mr. Nate and Ms. Amy also starting at 9:15am!
Parables of Parenting Bible Study
Sundays, September 15 - November 3
9:15-9:45am (childcare provided)
Do you see curated versions of perfect parenting on Facebook and Instagram and wonder why you are constantly falling short? Do you think how can I ever measure up? Thankfully, God gives us a much better example to follow in the words of scripture. Join us this fall starting this Sunday as we look for inspiration from famous parents in the Bible. You may be surprised at what we find!
Lunch and Learn: Family Mission and Vision Statement
Sunday, September 22
11am-12:30pm (childcare provided)
Join us after worship as we recreate a workshop featured at the Montreat Authentic Parenting Retreat. Parents will reflect on the ways in which faith anchors their goals for their family and work together to write a unique Family Mission and Vision Statement designed to provide clarity and guidance for all the “technical” decisions we make as parents. Please use this link here to RSVP for the workshop.

Welcome to our Interim Youth Director,
Nora DeWater!
We are posting this article again in case you missed it last week. We are so grateful for Nora's support as our interim youth director and for her musical talents as well - Nora was one of our performers at Music in the Grove - and she was excellent! If you haven't met her yet, we encourage you to introduce yourself this Sunday, and if you have a child in grades 5th-high school, we hope you will send them this Sunday evening from 5-6:30 p.m. for our first youth group session with Nora!
As part of our partnership with Ministry Architects, Nora DeWater has joined our team and is serving as East Brentwood’s Interim Youth Director this year. Nora was born and raised in Seattle, Washington: her favorite place in the world (Nashville has become a close second!). Her mother was a Presbyterian Minister at several churches growing up, so Nora was actively involved in her church, her youth group, and even the Presbyterian Youth Triennium conferences. Her first real job was working at her Presbytery church camp, Soundview, where she wrote songs and led music for the children and high schoolers. Nora followed her dream of music to Belmont University, where she studied Audio Engineering Technology.
She lives in a basement apartment with her roommate and a family that lives right upstairs. The parents of the family were Nora’s college Youth Pastors and an inspiration to her. Upon graduating in December of 2018, Nora has been working in a couple of studios and nannying for several families. She found out about EBPC when she took a new route to go babysit for a family one Saturday, saw the sign on Concord Road, and spontaneously decided to visit the church the next day. Ever since that first Sunday, she was hooked! She loved the people and the community that welcomed her and reminded her of home. Nora is excited to participate in any way in the church, but especially serving as the Interim Youth Director!
