Pastor's Devotional...
September 12, 2019

We’re beginning our sermon series on the nature and strategies of satan. I was intrigued by Chief Justice Scalia’s comments on the devil in an interview several years ago with an obviously skeptical reporter. He acknowledged belief in the devil and then opined that he is not so obviously, overtly at work today as in Jesus’ day (pigs over a cliff) because of a change in strategy; lay low and convince people he doesn’t exist!
(Scalia also fussed at the obviously skeptical reporter, reminding that the vast majority of people who have ever lived believe in satan, including “smarter people than you and me”.)
The purpose of our sermon series is to remind he is real and sensitize us to his ploys/schemes/ strategies. Keep in mind as we probe scriptural truths the fact that you and I are in the midst of that great struggle between good and evil. Romans 16:20 “The God of peace will soon crush satan under your feet.” I always thought of that being an exchange involving a definitive stomp but turns out in the Greek the word means to grind two surfaces together until the weaker is destroyed by the stronger.
So let’s equip ourselves in the coming weeks with scriptural insights and fortify ourselves with worship. Our Lord uses us as a primary weapon/tool in the war against evil in the daily grind of life. We, of necessity, will be up against, in close contact with the darkness. Let’s enhance His strength in us.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, I know satan is greater than me but not the Great One in me. Grant confidence, peace and wisdom for the cosmic struggle in which I play a part. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
