Urban Agriculture Week, September 14-22

It’s time once again, to celebrate Toronto’s thriving urban agriculture scene with Urban Agriculture Week - an event made official by the City of Toronto in 2017 and organized by Toronto Urban Growers. It all starts with the GrowTO Fair on September 14 which will include the Best in GrowTO urban-style agriculture competition.

What follows is eight days of Urban Ag inspired events taking place all over the city, including garden tours, local community dinners, workshops, a film screening and much more. Check out the Urban Ag Week Event Listings and join in the celebrations!

Marc's Tips in the Middle #1

Days are getting shorter, daylight savings ends soon, and kids are back and forth to school, all of which make driving more challenging than mid-summer cruising. Here are a few tips and reminders for drivers, and one for cyclists too.

Every year, there are incidents involving cars and school buses. Here’s a simple reminder of a simple rule: Flashing red lights on a school bus means STOP IN BOTH DIRECTIONS – from behind the bus, and approaching the bus. The bus driver will keep the lights flashing until exiting passengers have reached the sidewalk on EITHER side of the road, which means kids could be crossing on-coming traffic. So…just stop, in both directions. No rush is worth a child’s life. More details here.

Marc's Tips in the Middle #2

People opening doors into oncoming bikes has become so frequent, it is now part of the cyclists' lexicon – “dooring” or “I was doored by some *&$(@ driver!” Europeans have a trick when opening their car doors. Reach for the door handle with your far hand – from the driver’s seat, use your right hand; from the passenger’s seat, use your left hand. This forces you to twist your torso and turn your head, the most natural position from which to check for oncoming cyclists. And open your door slowly, in case you missed someone in your vehicle’s your blind spot.

Film Screening: Modified,

A Food Lover's Journey into GMOs

As part of Urban Ag Week celebrations BUFCO is partnering with our colleagues TAS Design Build and Fresh City Farms to bring you a Pay-What-You-Can screening of the award winning documentary Modified by Canadian filmmaker Aube Giroux. The show opens with a short film, “Why Farmers Markets?”  from the Earth to Tables Legacies Project coordinated by Deborah Barndt. Reserve your seats at Eventbrite.

Tuesday September 17, 6:45pm

Revue Cinema, 400 Roncesvalles Ave.

Modified Movie Trailer
Filmmaker Aube Giroux and her mother embark on a very personal and poignant investigative journey to find out why genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are not labeled on food products in the United States and Canada, despite being labeled in 64 countries around the world.

Interweaving the personal and the political, the film is anchored around the filmmaker’s relationship to her mom, a gardener and food activist who battled cancer during the film's production. Their intimate mother-daughter quest for answers, fuelled by a shared love of food, reveals the extent to which the agribusiness industry controls our food policies, making a strong case for a more transparent and sustainable food system. A visual celebration of food and family legacy, the film has been praised by world-renowned chef Jacques Pépin as “a very personal, tender, touching tribute and a well-researched, enlightening and powerful documentary”. An official selection at over 60 international film festivals. Winner of 14 awards, including 4 Audience Favorite Awards, and the 2019 James Beard Foundation Broadcast Media award for best documentary.

Marc's Tips in the Middle #3

Cyclists are becoming increasingly aware of the rules of the road, largely out of self- preservation on Toronto’s dangerous roads. As a driver and a cyclist, I often see cyclists using hand signals to show intent. Top notch! However, some cyclists ride as though hand signals are some sort of automatic right-of-way or force-field. Signaling a left turn to change lanes, for instance, does NOT mean it is automatically safe to go. Check over your shoulder for oncoming traffic, and make your lane change only when it’s safe to do so. A car or other vehicle passing you on the left has the right-of-way, both legally and safety-wise. Don’t assume that a hand signal means it’s automatically safe to make your move.

Life with Chickens:
Expanding the BUFCO Urban Farm

Question: Why did the chicken cross the road?
Answer: There is no right answer.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way: WE HAVE CHICKENS!

Feeling as though no farm experience – urban or otherwise – is truly complete without some sort of livestock, we brought in some short-term egg laying birds. Rentals, in fact.

With the guidance of Homestead Sharon of Rent-the-Chicken, we brought home two Red Star hens. These are hybrid birds, with a Rhode Island Red dad and a mom from one of a few other breeds.

During the recent backyard redo, including new raised garden beds and Wiarton flagstone path, BBQ area and lounge area complete with posts for hammocking – we made sure to carve out an area for the birds - the Girls - leaving enough room to move the small coop around a little bit to allow for easy cleaning of the ground below.
