Q. How do I talk about sustainability with someone who isn't as knowledgeable as me without coming off as rude or harsh? I see a lot of sustainability shaming and I'm not into that. -P.

A. Thanks, P. for your great question! And thanks for wanting to combat this. Shaming anyone around sustainability is NOT a way to engage or get them excited about the topic. Here are some suggestions for talking about sustainability with someone who's new to the topic:

1. Follow their lead. If they bring up plastic or soil quality or compost, stick to that topic and follow their interest to start a conversation. If you have suggestions, give a few. If not and you have a resource, give it to them.

2.  Less is more. Don't pound them over the head with something. Multiple short conversations have more impact than a single long one.

3. Tie it to something personal. If they bring up farmer's markets or something related, share a personal anecdote about why you think it's important to purchase local food.
