Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost

THE LATEST HAPPENINGS AT GSLC

Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said:  “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.  And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?  For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you,  saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’
“Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand?  If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.
tables for EIGHT
You’re invited to dinner! Gathering around the table for a meal can be a sacred time of connecting with others. When we share a meal, we are sharing more than the food before us, but also a part of our lives.  This fall, we invite you to join others from Good Shepherd for four dinners over the course of four months. Each month you’ll gather with the same group of people (about 8 total) to eat, talk, and imagine.

This isn’t a planning session or workshop.

Our hope through these meals is for our congregation to be even more deeply connected to one another. During our dinner hour conversations, we will imagine what life together at Good Shepherd might look like in the years to come. And we trust that as we gather, two or three in Jesus’ name, that God’s Spirit will be in the midst of us.

Dates of meals:
September 18
October 9
November 20
December 11

How does it work:
All meals are held at Good Shepherd from 6:15 -7:45. The main dish and suggested prompts for conversation will be provided and we ask participants to bring a dish to pass. Each “table of 8” will be assigned a small group dining room where they will share their meal with one another.

How do I sign up?
Go to
eflock.org/tablesfor8 and fill out the form there. Families will be assigned to the same table.

“THREADS OF KINDNESS”- AN OPPORTUNITY TO ASSIST KIDS IN OUR COMMUNITY

In our relationships with our community’s schools we sometimes become aware of specific items needed to support kids attending our local schools.  We will be sending out requested items via our “Threads of Kindness” email distribution list, which is being resurrected after being inactive for a time.  You will have the opportunity to manage your subscription if you are currently on this list.  If you would like to be added to the list to begin receiving the “Threads of Kindness” emails from Good Shepherd,  please let the office or pastors know.  Thank you!

CORE OF DISCIPLESHIP
Sunday October 6 at 11:30
Sunday October 13 at 11:30

This two-session class is intended to encounter the core of where we see God engaging and loving the world.  It is designed for people new to the faith, those wishing to transfer their membership from another congregation to Good Shepherd, and for anyone who wants to review the basics of the Christian faith.  Our hope is not to grow membership, but to grow in discipleship as we respond to the call of Christ in our lives.
A light meal will be provided.  If you need childcare, let us know as soon as possible so we can line up care.  Register at
eflock.org/core

DRIVERS NEEDED
As you know, Frances and Joyce Polson moved to Brookdale Senior Living.  They are hopeful that they can continue to worship at Good Shepherd.  But without a vehicle available, they need drivers to bring them to and from Sunday or Monday worship.
A signup sheet and further information for drivers are available on the Signup and Info Board in the Welcome Area.  Please consider this volunteer opportunity in our faith community.
