Run Home, Jack… Run Home, Jack… Run Home, Jack…

Homecoming Sunday is upon us!  Made popular in the early twentieth century by college and high schools around the nation, Homecoming celebrations were primarily about welcoming alumns back to their alma matter – it blossomed into weekends of ritual community building.  Though the church is totally on board with the concept of rituals and community building… there is a bit more to our celebration of Homecoming each year.

In that great and under-rated and reviewed movie Hook, Captain Hook’s pirates confuse the letters of Homerun, Jack at the ballgame created to help Peter Pan’s son Jack forget his father and previous life, and instead they spell and chant, “Run Home, Jack”!  A poignant moment in the movie – young Jack, for a brief instant, remembers.  He remembers who he is and who and what home is.  The moment is fleeting, before they correct their mistake and shout “homerun, Jack,” but it is a beautiful reminder that our souls all seek their true home.  Homecoming at Saint David’s and other churches around the globe is not just about picnics and the return to school and program year following summer vacations; it is God’s call to us to Run Home to our source… to our God and our church family.  It is a celebrating of our connection to God, one another and this place!

So – run home, Jack; run home, Jill; run home, Fred; run home, Jane… run home each of you. God and your Saint David’s family are waiting to celebrate with you!

Blessings upon you and those beloved to you,

Kristen
