September Artist: Susan Slapin
 
I love painting relatively abstract color fields/acrylic & mixed media, along with pastels. Each medium asks for a  different approach and understanding. Each is a different material with specific aspects, requirements, and Joys! I also love photographing people & place…unique beauty.

I have always been an Artist, observing the world through a sensory perception.  Growing up in Connecticut, viewing beautiful New England leaves.  I remember visiting Grandfather's printing company, with multiple images
rolling off long presses, full of colorful fresh inks, all fascinating, creating early visual impressions.

The Saga Goryu School of Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging) will present their annual flower show in the small conference room at Orcas Library on Saturday, September 28th - 10:00am to 5:00pm, and Sunday, September 29th -12:00 to 3:00pm.  All are welcome!

This year the school will focus on NW native plants.  Each ikebana arrangement will feature at least one native plant, along with non-native flowers to create interesting contrasts. 

 Joan Stamm, the teacher of Saga ikebana is the author of Heaven and Earth are Flowers: Reflections on Ikebana and Buddhism and more recently A Pilgrimage in Japan: the 33 Temples of Kannon (www.JoanDStamm.com).  She and her students—Mark Nichols, Joni Vader, Gwen Stamm, and Alexis Terry Bouchard—will create a variety of ikebana arrangements for your viewing pleasure.  A digital slide show of ikebana arrangements will also be on view.

Please come and see the show, sign the guestbook, and enjoy the peace and harmony conveyed in Japanese flower arranging.
BOOK DROPS AROUND THE ISLAND
In addition to the book drop in front of the library, we have three more book drops conveniently located around the island.  To the east, the Olga book drop is located right next to the Olga store.  On the west side in Deer Harbor, you can find the book drop in front of the Deer Harbor Community Club.  At the Orcas ferry landing, the book drop sits in front of the Cottage Gift Shop on Orcas Road.  The book drops are checked and emptied on a weekly basis.  
DISPLAY CASE:  The Library invites you to help fill our display case.  We change themes monthly and are currently scheduling displays for 2020.  If interested, please email Lynn Johnson at ljohnson@orcaslibrary.org.
