Meet our New Staff, Part I
Mrs. Craig
We are excited to introduce Mrs. Craig! Mrs. Craig will teach Middle School Girls social studies and science. She joins us after 24 years in Cudahy Public Schools and one year at Carmen Northwest Middle School. She has been a Middle School English/Language Arts teacher as well as an elementary teacher and reading interventionist. Mrs. Craig's Master's degree is from Mount Mary University and her Reading coursework was completed at Viterbo University. We are so pleased to have her here! Welcome!
Rabbi Herskovitz
We welcome Rabbi Eitan Herskovitz to YES!  Rabbi Herskovitz, together with his wife Talia and their 3 children, moved from Savannah, GA, and are excited to be a part of the Milwaukee community.  Rabbi Herskovitz learned in Yerushalayim, Baltimore, and Lakewood, and most recently in the Savannah Kollel. Rabbi Herskovitz has experience learning with and teaching a wide range of ages at various levels. He joins the resource room staff to offer support and enrichment services for the older boys in Gemara. Rabbi Herskovitz also serves as an assistant to Rabbi Borsuk in the development office and a permanent sub for the boys Judaic classes. We are delighted to have him on staff in these expanded, new roles at our school!

A Busy Start
By Mrs. Aronow
The girls in 5G have started the year with a variety of content and activities. As they establish year-long routines for math, reading, social studies and science, they have also demonstrated baseline skills. Using place value as a conceptual starting point, the girls solved problems in small groups; math conversation is essential to learning this year! The Hundred Dresses is our current class read aloud, while visits to the library have stocked personal reading stashes. Sharing writing responses and summaries is a regular part of our week and the girls will grow more comfortable with this process as the year progresses. Our social studies takes place through storytelling and Native Journals, while science is a hands-on venture that includes gardening and lab experiments. A fantastic circle of supportive classmates, these girls are ready to make this year count!

Middle School English
By Mrs. Aronow
Middle school English demands a great deal of effort. The resilience to read through difficult texts or write in a fluently and effectively rarely comes without explicit instruction and practice. This year, the sixth, seventh and eighth grade girls will use Writer's Notebooks as ongoing logs of notes, rough drafts and revisions as they march steadily toward final copies that they will be proud to own. As with all skills worth mastering, the ability to write a technically sound, clear and complete essay may cause grimaces before it results in grins; this is to be expected in any journey. We will study literature genres and styles through Book Clubs so students have ample opportunity to analyze how authors use language to share stories, illustrate ideas and prompt questions. Lastly, the middle school girls will practice the conventions necessary to proofread their work; grammatically correct writing will translate to work that others can read easily and accurately. Currently, Mrs. Aronow is reading books about botany, women scientists, cozy minimalism and yet another book on the current reasoning for English grammar rules. What are you reading?
