Your Weekly Recap

By MARGHERITA BEALE

Hello, State Hornet readers.

This week in Sacramento State news: students rallied at the California State Capitol in support of campus abortion care; Sac State's Brown Issues organization honored the victims of the El Paso shooting and celebrated Latinx culture; the football team won its first game of the season and the women's volleyball team won the Sac State Invitational before losing in a three-sets-to-one loss against rival team UC Davis.

Last Friday, we launched our first-ever State Hornet podcasts, complete with news, sports and opinion segments. They are available on Spotify, iTunes and on our website.

Here's a roundup of the most important things that happened between last week and today.

1. Sac State's Brown Issues honors victims of El Paso shooting

Sac State’s Brown Issues organization honored the lives lost in the Aug. 3 shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas and celebrated Latinx culture at a California State Capitol event on Tuesday evening.

“We want to make sure we are organizing events that align with our fundamental pillars — pursuing higher education, resisting patriarchy and ending genocidal practices,” Kimberly Gudino, college ambassador for Brown Issues, said.

The event featured music, dance, art and food to celebrate Latinx culture.

"This event is special because it's community based," Savannah Mendoza, a Sac State student, said. "It's important for us as Latinos to come together and celebrate the things others hate us for. To be so free and happy is very important."

2. Students rally in Sacramento for college campus abortion care

California college students and Senator Connie Leyva rallied in support of abortion care on public college campuses such as Sacramento State at the Capitol building in Sacramento Tuesday.

Leyva co-authored Senate Bill 24 or the “College Student Right To Access Act,” which would offer non-surgical medical abortions to students on California State University and University of California campuses if signed into law.

“We have a lot of people here, from students to political activists to medical providers,” Sac State alumna Elena Denecochea said. “It’s inspiring to see the support from different facets of life. Signing SB 24 was one of Governor Newsom’s campaign promises. We are now closer than ever."

The rally came just days after the Assembly Appropriations committee passed the bill. SB 24 was passed in the Senate earlier this year and is now headed to the Assembly.

3. Hornets break scoring record in 77-19 rout of Southern Oregon

The Sacramento State football team got the Troy Taylor era off to the best possible start with a record-breaking 77-19 win against Southern Oregon University last Saturday.

The 11 touchdowns and 77 points were school records, eclipsing the previous record of nine touchdowns and 76 points set back in 1968 against the University of San Francisco. The 685 total yards are the second-most in school history, falling 9 yards shy of the record set against Montana State University in 2014.

The Hornets will face off against Arizona State University tonight at 7 p.m. at Sun Devil Stadium. Read football beat writer Mack Ervin III's preview of the game here and tune in to our Twitter @TheStateHornet for live game updates.
4. Sac State students maneuver new Hornet Bookstore layout

Sac State’s Hornet Bookstore changed its layout over the summer, arranging textbooks alphabetically by author as opposed to alphabetically by department.

"Last year when it was ordered by subject it was easier, I liked it better,” said Sac State undeclared major Jason Pettit. “I’m struggling to find my anthropology textbook because it’s labeled with two last names.”

SHIAVON'S JAWN: A hot girl summer turned hot mess

What happens when the girlfriend of the man you're dating unexpectedly calls you?

Read all about it in the first installment of opinion editor Shiavon Chatman's column, which will feature her straight-to-DVD life, her hip-hop snob opinions, being uncomfortable in this political climate and life as a black woman in predominantly white spaces.

You can also listen to the first episode of the Shiavon's Jawn podcast, where Shiavon talks with Sac State student Sade Butler about work, becoming a young manager and coping with stress.

REVIEW: 'The A List' is Netflix's new B-list show

"If you have a soft spot for corny teen dramas, are intrigued by supernatural powers or have a love for our friends across the pond, then 'The A List' should land a spot in your queue of shows to binge through soon."
