Dear CoCoRaHS Teachers,

Rain Gauge Week has begun, and that means it's time to make sure your gauge is outside today!  Even if you don't have a permanent spot for it yet, do your best to get it outside today (before any precipitation falls...if you can).  If you have a picture of your gauge, please share it with us on Twitter or Instagram and tag #CoCoRaHS!

Data Entry Starts Tomorrow

As many of you know, entering data is easy.  Simply log in and it should default to the data entry page, or click on 'My Data' at the top of the page at any time.  Click here if you want your ID or password emailed to you.  You can also just reply to this e-mail and we will be happy to help you obtain your login information.  In order for your data to be included on the daily map, make sure your observation time is before 9:30.  *Keep in mind, you can submit your data at any time, but the "time of observation" must be before 9:30 AM*.  Simply type in the liquid amount and select "submit" and you are done!  Click here to watch a two-minute data entry tutorial.

Data Entry Tips

  • The Importance (and ease) of Entering Zero (0.00)

Please remember that even if it does not rain, entering a zero is still valuable information.  Your data entry form defaults to 0.00, so all you need to do is log in and select 'submit'.  Drought scientists use CoCoRaHS data too, and are especially interested in this information.  When scientists look at the data, seeing 0.00 is way better then seeing no data at all!
  • "T" for Trace

If you encounter rain (or snow) that ends up being not enough to measure by the time you observe your gauge, please report a capital letter 'T' in the field.  Even if the drops didn't land in your gauge - if you saw it - count it as a trace.
  • Observation Notes

Please use this box on your data entry page to enter any comments that would help the scientists who are looking at your data.  Notes such as "raining during time of observation", for instance, would be very valuable information.  You can also mention clouds, temperature, or anything else weather related.

Condition Monitoring!

Have you heard about our condition monitoring report?  This once-per-week report is meant to help drought scientists determine drought conditions in your area.  You can view the animation and training materials here, and then go ahead and give it a try by submitting a report based on a class discussion.  This would be a good activity to do every Monday.

Questions?

No Problem!  Simply reply to this e-mail or contact us at education@cocorahs.org and we will do our best to help you.

Have a great week and lets hope for some precipitation!

Sincerely,

Noah Newman
