Parents,

This year, we adopted a new math program for grades K-3 called Eureka Math.  For the past several years, we were not entirely pleased with the growth we were seeing from our students in Mathematics especially in the lower grades.  We sent a number of teachers, our math coach, and myself to participate in a year long study of mathematical practices and teaching last year to begin the process of revising our math approach and curriculum.  We needed a program that would stretch our kids math thinking.  The math books we were using were not helping our students to think deeper about a process.  From this conference, many schools that had been struggling used Eureka Math.  The student's ability to comprehend and ability to work through more challenging tasks improved greatly with this program.  We want this for our students here at Saint Jude.  With any new program, there will be growing pains, we also hope to see some productive struggle from our students as that leads to growth.  However, we want you as parents to feel equipped to help your child as well.  Here are some sites and resources to help our students with the work and the process related to Eureka Math.

1. You Tube videos by Duane Habecker
    - He has videos with each module for each grade that we are using the program.  Another explanation by another voice might help.

2. Khan Academy
    - https://www.khanacademy.org/math/k-8-grades/engageny/topic-foundations-engageny
= This is a remediation site for skills that a student may lack.

= This is the site that all grades can access for extra practice.
= If a students gets the particular skill wrong.  There is an explanation to coincide with it.
3. IXL
    - https://www.ixl.com/resources/curriculum-alignments
= This site gives the practice set alignments to each part of Eureka.

What's Happening...

Ask Father Marshall
Fr. Marshall came and spoke to the 8th grade classes last week. He answered questions about his life, our Catholic faith, and questions about our parish.  Each class has an "Ask Fr. Marshall" board in their classrooms and he is excited to come to our school and have discussions with the students.  We are so grateful that Fr. Marshall is so willing to be involved here at the school!

Career Day in 3rd Grade
The third grade did research projects and presentations on different careers. We had several parents came to talk about their careers!  They talked about what they do, where they work, what kind of education they have, and some details about their careers. It was very informational for everyone!
