The President's Report

The busy cultural life of our community continues, and 2019 is particularly significant as it marks the 90th anniversary of our Progress Association.  The focus of the celebrations will be the October long weekend, when the Tides of Time exhibition will be open in the Hall on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th of October.  This exhibition will comprise historic photos and other memorabilia loaned by former and current Pearl Beach residents, and will I am sure be of great interest to anyone who would like to know more about the rich cultural history of our unique village.  Entry to the exhibition is free, so please come along and bring your family and friends as well. 

The Annual General Meeting of the Association will take place as usual in October, but please note that due to the 90th anniversary events on the long weekend, the AGM has been rescheduled to 5pm on Saturday 12th October.  The AGM also marks the end of the terms for the Executive Committee, including the office holders.   Association members who are interested in nominating to join the Executive Committee will need to submit a nomination form, signed by two financial members.  The forms, which will need to be submitted by Saturday 5th October, will be included in the AGM package which you all will receive early September. --Peter Romey

Oral History Project
An exciting project that involved conducting a series of
personal interviews over this last year with current and past
residents to produce a video and audio podcasts by Pearl Beach
film makers Rachel Shea and Andrew Frost. This project has
been supported by a Heritage Grant from Central Coast Council.

Hot Dogs on Parade

Sunday 8th September. The event will be held on the reserve next to the Tennis Courts between 9am and 12 noon.

Last year, we held a fun doggy event to raise money for Guide Dogs NSW/ACT. We all had a great time and raised over $4,000.

We are calling out for all Pearl Beach dogs, their owners and friends to save the date to attend this years Hot Dogs on Parade.

Again we encourage you to bring along your favourite Toy/Ornament Dog, your “family pet” or just come ...all live dogs must be on a lead. A small registration fee of $5.00 for each “doggy” entry will go to Guide Dogs NSW/ACT.

We will have Hot Dogs and water available for refreshments.
Remember all our entries can be “winners”, and who can forget the fun we had with Colin and Jo Jo’s “Pawtraits”....
So come along, have some fun and support a great cause!!

Pearl Beach’s pristine dunes and bush front are a direct result of our team of volunteers who represent Bushcare and   Dunecare’s fight against weeds. Our surrounding neighbours do not have such a dedicated group and are now overrun by weeds and rubbish.
So, we are calling on our lovers of our village to come along and lend a hand.
Help our Bushcare and Dunecare volunteers create a real difference. Our aim is to protect our coastline and to encourage the regeneration of native vegetation.
We promise the work load won’t be too much. So, come along, have a good time and help us nurture our natural environment. Tasks will be varied to suit levels of fitness and you will be amply rewarded by a hearty sausage sizzle with fellow neighbours and volunteers.

BYO gloves, sunscreen and hat.

Pearl Beach Artists Trail

You never know what you’ll see or who you’ll meet on the   

Saturday 5th October 2019 

10am - 4pm 

The Pearl Beach craft and art group were established a number of years ago bringing together local artisans with unique skills.  The inaugural artists trail this year will be celebrating the Pearl Beach Progress Associations 90th Anniversary on Saturday 5th October of the long weekend. 

A map with details of the trail and addresses of the exhibitors will be available at the Pearl Beach Memorial Hall, 9 Diamond Road.  

Come along and enjoy paintings, jewellery, ceramics, photography and sculpture  hand crafted by twelve creative individuals who have produced these decorative and beautiful  items.

PEARL BEACH RURAL FIRE SERVICE
Fire Shed Extension
 
The extension to the existing fire shed was completed in July 2019 and is currently undergoing final checks and preparation for routine use. The extension will be formally opened on the 14th September in conjunction with a ‘Get Ready for the Fire Season’ information session and refreshments. Members of the Pearl Beach community will be most welcome.
The extension will be used as an indoor training area and a storage cum-maintenance facility for fire fighting equipment.

A Recap of Winter Events
High Tea Fundraiser
 
The Pearl Beach Art and Craft Group held their annual Biggest High Tea, the Pearl Beach version of the Biggest High Tea. Once again it was a very successful community event, rasing $950 for the Cancer Council.

The Music Festival held over the June Long Weekend showcased some world reknown musicians such as Simon Tedeschi and Andrew Haveron pictured here with  Events Coordinator Lynne Lillico.

Tennis and Bowls Social Day

Thanks to everyone who attended our recent Social Day held 24 June.
We were blessed with terrific weather and our tennis players and bowlers enjoyed the great conditions.

The winners of our bowls competitions were Bev George and Andrew Cordwell. Marion Stevens won the ladies tennis.
David George took out the lucky door prize.

 Crommelin Native Arboretum 43rd Anniversary
Over 60 volunteers and guests attended this special day. We were pleased also to welcome Mayor Cr Jane Smith who spoke very positively about the importance of volunteers in the community.  She especially complemented the Arboretum volunteers on how well they have looked after this over the past 43 years.

Pearl Beach Plodders
We had a wonderful day in brilliant sunshine at the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens. We had Devonshire Tea on arrival and, after walking, enjoyed our picnic lunch before heading back home. Plodders are off to Kiama for 4 nights in September.   --Bev Lapacek
 Glee Club Concert  - A Time to Remember
This year the concert celebrated the 90th Anniversary of the Pearl Beach Progress Association with a fabulous weekend filled with fun, laughter, dance & a few tears. The concerts really did embrace the audiences and they left the hall with a smile on their faces, and laughter in their hearts.
The Glee Club concerts provide opportunity for locals and friends to join with the Pearl Beach Singers continuing the tradition to entertain enthusiastic audiences filling the Pearl Beach Memorial Hall.

SOUP, SAX & SWEET NIGHT

The Soup, Sax and Sweets event to raise funds for Homeless Support Inc. was held on Saturday night 17 Aug.  A large crowd filled the Pearl Beach Memorial Hall and all who attended enjoyed the fun event.

The soups and desserts were great and the Sax, flute and clarinet music provided by “Busker Barnwell” was fantastic. Guests were addressed by Charles Boyton from Coast Shelter, who graphically explained the plight of the homeless and the work of the organisation.

The event raised a total of $3903.00  which will be put  to good work for the homeless particulalry providing winter sleeping bags.  The organisers would like to thank The Rotary Club of Woy Woy and Pearl Beach Progress Association for their invaluable support and sponsorship, and also the many volunteers who generously produced the delicious soups and sweets.

The next fun-raiser event for the Homeless Support charity will be the High Afternoon Tea on the 24th November. Details to follow.

Farewell to
Jean and John Irvine 
Jean and John have been instumental in inviting special guest musicians and provIded opportunity for young music students who with the Pearl Beach Singers have continued to produce exciting and innovative concerts. 

The Glee Family worked so hard to make this year a very special one to farewell Jean & John.  Their retirement leaves a gap, but we know they are looking forward to a slower pace and enjoying exciting journeys, and their legacy lives on…..the Singers will continue to perform and entertain locals, family and friends alike.

PEARL BEACH BOWLERS COMMEMORATE A FRIEND
The Pearl Beach Bowlers paid tribute to their fellow bowler John Greenway who tragically died earlier this year as the result of a cycling accident.  John was a keen sportsman, an enthusiastic bowler, a great team player and skilled wood designer and craftsman who could put his hand to making just about anything.

In honour of him the score board (which he made) is now named  
‘The John Greenway Scoreboard.’
It was unveiled on Friday 12 July by Marijke Greenway his wife of 51 years.  This was followed by a lunch to commemorate his great contribution to the bowls team.

Treking the Kokoda Trail for Charity
Pearl Beach residents Dawn McClean and Dr Mark Burton completed the treacherous Kokoda Trail to raise funds for the Homeless.  As a result, they were able to purchase 81 pairs of shoes, 15 pairs were sent to Woolloomoolloo and the rest  were distributed here on the Coast. What an incredible effort!

Prostate Research
Elizabeth Lees is a Pearl Beach part-time resident and is currently researching ways to understand and help men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. At the moment she is looking at the factors that can increase the quality of life for those men (and consequently their partners and families).

She is looking for men who are willing to participate in an exploratory survey examining how much relationship satisfaction and communication confidence during medical interactions impacts health-related outcomes. Results of the survey will assist health professionals better understand and design more targeted interventions/treatments to address the issues the research has highlighted. 

The research has full ethical approval through Monash University and participants do not need to attach their name to any information they supply. The survey will take about 20 minutes to complete.

September is Dementia Action Month and Central Coast Dementia Alliance and the Lived Experience Dementia Advisory Group are proud to present this FREE community information session. Dr Michelle Reiss, Lifestyle Medicine Physician, will present a workshop on reducing your risk of dementia. At this stage, the only true intervention we have for dementia is to reduce the risk and delay its onset, through Lifestyle optimisation.
 
We will have people speaking about their lived experience of dementia.
1 in 3 cases of dementia can be prevented - so how do we keep our brains as FIT as possible? Dr Reiss will discuss the 9 Pillars of Dementia Risk Reduction with some
surprising inclusions and latest research on living well and reducing your risk of developing dementia.

We will also have a panel discussion including people living with dementia. This gives the audience the opportunity to ask questions which will be discussed by the panel.
 Morning tea will be provided.

Now that Gosford Council is no longer contacting surrounding neighbours when Building Applications are lodged, Planning alerts are growing in popularity.
Planning Alerts is a free service which searches as many planning authority websites as it can find and emails you the details of applications near you.
The aim is to enable shared scrutiny of what is being built (and knocked down) in people’s communities.

  2. Enter your street address.
  3. Enter your email address.
You will then receive alerts for new applications nearby.

DOES YOUR CAT HAVE A CURFEW?
Cat lovers love their cats as much as dog lovers love their dogs. However where a dog may sleep happily on a veranda, a cat left outdoors overnight will probably spend time exploring and hunting. it is important that cats are shut in from dusk to dawn, because of the risk they pose to wild life. Research has shown that this will halve the amount of wildlife killings. Kitty may not like it but it is the right thing to do to help protect our beautiful fauna.
 
PARTY HOUSE DILEMNAS
Party houses are a significant issue not only for permanent residents but also for regular weekenders.
Noisy groups front and back each night and numerous cars parked everywhere can be very stressful for neighbours when these occurrences are regular.
Holiday Property landlords are required to
  • provide off street parking e.g. four (4) off street parking spaces as stacked car parking spaces on the driveway for   properties  large enough to sleep several people.
  • Restrict the use of outdoor entertaining areas at the rear of the dwelling to the following hours:
Friday and Saturday                7am to 10pm
Monday - Thursday                 7am to  9pm
Sunday and Public Holidays   8am to 9pm
  • Limits also apply to the number of people who may stay at a property, depending on the number of bedrooms.
 
If you have ongoing concerns, Gosford Council will investigate upon receiving at least 2 complaints from neighbours within 40 metres of the problem house. Contact council on 1300 463 945
Spring Garden Tips
                 10 Must-Do Gardening Tips for Spring
  1. Plant seeds for flowers and vegies for summer.
  2. Fertilise all plants and lawns as growth resumes.
  3. Prune hibiscus and also prune plants that flower in winter and early spring.
  4. Plant herbs.
  5. Weed and renew mulch on garden beds.
  6. Divide and repot cymbidium orchids after flowering.
  7. Watch for pests on new growth such as aphids and snails. Aphids can be squashed or treated. Snails and slugs can be trapped or deterred.
  8. Repot potted plants that are root bound.
  9. Divide herbaceous clumping plants as new growth resumes.
  10. Dead head spring annuals and bulbs.

Environmental Disaster
Some of you may have read about an environmental crisis at Pearl Beach recently, when a “rat eaten” bean bag was dumped at the bottom of Gem Road. It split open, spilling the toxic contents into a pristine waterway. Hundreds of thousands of tiny polystyrene beans rolled across the street, onto the sand and into the water that pools between Pearls and the rock pool. A local builder saw the beans blowing across the nature strip and one of his labourers spent 5 hours trying to vacuum the beads before they reached the water.
Central coast council, Seabird Rescue Central Coast and several other volunteers assisted in the clean-up, although they found it impossible to collect all the beads, which are mistaken for food by birds and marine life. They can also travel across the globe via winds and sea currents.
If you have an old bean bag you no longer need, please dispose of it carefully, by bagging the beans and enclosing in a bin. When left in bags in roadside rubbish collections, the bush turkeys destroy the bags, releasing the beans into the environment.

'A lovely local Pearl Beach story ......

We live next door to an extremely large tree which is home to a few Kookaburra families, as well as a pair of King Parrots and a family of Lorikeets.  Recently, our neighbour Josh found two baby Lorikeets on the lawn, they had fallen out of their nest.  He rescued them and made up a secure nest on his back deck where their parents know where they are and visit on a regular basis to check up on them.

Last week he took them down to his garden and they had a go at flying, it was such a beautiful and moving experience and they didn't mind having their photo taken.
