2019 Session Highlights

In this edition, we take a glimpse into the two concurrent breakout sessions being offered on Friday, October 4 from 4:30 - 6:00pm.
Session Spotlight: Board & CEO Recruitment

Presenters: Tim Foster, Director, Northern Credit Union & DF Executive; Cindy Dobson, Consultant, Central 1 People Solutions

Succession planning is a key issue for credit unions. This session will consider what we are looking for on our boards, as well as nominations and Director recruitment strategies. Culture is an important element that will also be explored. Time will be set aside for an "Open Forum" discussion.

This breakout session is designed for Board Chairs and Vice-Chairs. Pre-registration is required as space is limited.

Session Spotlight: Director Development & Competencies

Presenters: Korinne Collins, VP, Professional Development & Education, Canadian Credit Union Association (CCUA); Guy Hubert, Executive VP, Credit Union & Prudential, Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario

There is a desire to support credit unions with clarity about how expectations have shifted in examining good governance capability at the board. Several credit unions have indicated that there is a much more prescriptive response by the examiner and little to no tolerance for directors not meeting the competency framework. There are several questions to be answered including:
  • What does FSRA expect in terms of documentation to demonstrate they are meeting the competencies?
  • Exploration and definition of best practices for evaluation of the board competencies
  • How might the DNA research provide indicators to the board of its collective make up and to be positioned as a balanced board?
All other delegates are invited to join this breakout session. Pre-registration is not required.

Remembering those who have left us...

Over the past two years, the DF has included an In Memoriam as part of the AGM, to remember the board directors who we have lost over the past year. If there is a director that your credit union or caisse populaire would like us to recognize, please let us know by emailing directors@ontario.coop before September 30th.

Platinum Sponsor Recognition

The Directors’ Forum is very grateful to have the support of the Canadian Credit Union Association/Cusource and Alterna Savings as this year’s Platinum Sponsors!

The CCUA/Cusource have been long-time partners of the DF, working closely with the Executive to bring directors quality learning and professional development opportunities each year. For the past several years, we have partnered to provide our delegates with a half-day session for which they receive a half-day credit under CUDA.

This year's session, "High Performing Board Barometers" will take place the morning of Saturday, October 5th. The 3.5 hour session is valued at $359 and is included in the DF registration fee, making the cost to attend the whole conference well worth the price! There will also be several CUDA sessions held at the same venue on Wednesday, October 2 and Thursday, October 3. Learn more about CCUA/Cusource.
Alterna Savings and Alterna Bank, also known as Alterna Financial Group, has been serving members for over a century. Their roots run deep as a financial co-operative, and they’ve come a long way over the years. With 33 locations in Ontario, Alterna offers a full range of financial products and services, all with a commitment to supporting the well-being of their members, employees and communities.

For the second year in a row, Alterna Savings has sponsored the DF at the Platinum level. This support allows us to provide delegates with more quality speakers and current content, which they can learn from and take back to their credit unions. Learn more about Alterna Savings.

We thank both these incredible organizations, as well as all the other generous sponsors of the 2019 fall conference!
