Papercourt Recognised by the RYA
I’m delighted to tell you that Papercourt has once again been recognised by the RYA, and that the RYA Honours and Awards Panel has conferred an RYA Community Award – Outstanding Contribution on Jeremy Riley.

The annual RYA Volunteer Awards recognise outstanding individual contributions to the sport of sailing.

Jeremy has been a member of Papercourt for 13 years and has been leading the youth section for over 11 years. He has made youth sailing at Papercourt a fun and inclusive sport and with the support of many club volunteers has developed the youth section so that today there are over 150 PSC youth sailors in regular training aged between 7 and 18, with many preparing for local, national and squad selector events.

This is fantastic news for the club and recognition of how the club operates and the positive impact we have on so many lives.

The President of the RYA, The Princess Royal, will present the awards at a prestigious London venue in November of this year.

Our congratulations to Jeremy and our team of volunteers.

Improvements to  your Club Premises

On Monday 9th we start a programme of works to greatly improve the visual appearance of the clubhouse, especially the front entrance hall and the two classrooms with some small works in the clubhouse, which will have plastering, lighting changes and redecoration.  The contractors will be with us for about four or five weeks but it should not affect our normal activity.  During the project we will move to electric heating and some temporary lighting.

If you have any questions or comments please speak to Jeremy Sumeray, John Panting or Frank Brown who are looking after the works and not to the contractor or his staff.  Should there be any inconvenience (and there should not) we apologise in advance and are sure you will like the finished product.  You may also notice the showers have had a deep clean and the tiles are shiny again!

In addition to the above, we are replacing the fridges in the galley so that we can ensure we maintain food and drink at the correct temperature, and you will notice in the next few weeks that the lovely tub chairs will be updated, as the current ones have started to show their age.   If anyone would like to take away one or more of the old chairs (please make sure it is one of the old ones!) for a shed or workshop or similar, please help yourself.

If you are interested in purchasing the Glass Fronted Wine Cooler fridge from the front galley, please speak to Frank Brown.

Quiz Night - Saturday 19th October - New Booking System

The next of our ever popular quiz nights is on 19th October.  Bargain price of £8.00 per head will include quiz, posh ploughman's supper, and prizes, and guaranteed fun for everyone.  Teams of up to 8 people - book as a team, or book as individuals and we will make up teams on the night.   Members are welcome to bring guests - the more the merrier.

We are trialling a new booking system for this quiz, using our Sailing Club Manager system.  This is the same system we use for subscription renewals and duties, so all members should already have a login for the system.  So to book tickets, log in to Sailing Club Manager - there is a new tab on the left  hand side of the website.  Then click bookings in the menu, scroll to the bottom of the page, click Book Online and then Social, and up should pop the quiz booking page.  You can then book the number of tickets you need, and pay there and then.  There is even an option to let us know dietary requirements!

We hope that this will be an easy way for everyone to book, once we have all got used to the system.   If you have any queries, or difficulties booking online, please contact Jenny Snow on snowmail@btinternet.com and we will do it the old fashioned way!

If you do not have a Sailing Club Manager login, please contact membership@papercourt-sc.org.uk

Did you know....

in another new initiative you can also log in to Sailing Club Manager and find out what your Main and Full Committee have been working on on your behalf as we will now be loading the Committee Minutes onto the Sailing Club Manager system for you to see.

News from the Training Team

Congratulations to our new RYA Level 1 Sailors who completed a short four week Saturday morning course - you all did amazingly well, in quite tricky conditions.  Hoping to see you all out on the water soon.

We also congratulate our two new Power Boat Instructors - Brian and Ashley Scott.

Our next Adult Training opportunity is the Start to Race morning on Saturday 21st September

Aimed at members who are new to the club, or new to racing, we will explain how racing works at Papercourt, brush up on the basic racing rules, and then get out on the water to practice starts and mini races.   The morning is free to all members over 16, but it would be helpful if you could email training@papercourt-sc.org.uk to give us an idea of numbers.  9.00 am start in the classroom - if you can be rigged and ready by then, we will get more time on the water.  Club training boats are available to hire, or use your own.

Trophies - we need them back early this year

Our Trophies Guru Sue, is going on holiday just before the Annual Dinner and Prize-giving this year, so she has asked that if you have any Trophies at home you get out your silver polish, then return them as soon as possible (by the end of September at the latest) to the Galley Storeroom, so she can get a head start on preparing them for the engravers.

It is no part of Sue's job to polish your silverware, so please bring them back very very shiny.  No-one wants to be presented with a tarnished cup!

First of all thanks to all those who have already done their two duties this year and for those who have stood in at short notice.

The Duty Rota is rather thin on the ground for the months of Nov/ Dec and it would be helpful if members who have not done a duty in the second half of the year, could select one before the end of the year. It is always difficult filling the rota for the Ice Box series over Christmas/ New Year so it would be especially appreciated if these slots could be filled.   It is always better to pick your own suitable date, so have a look and see what you can do - otherwise the system will pick you for a duty, on what may be a less convenient date.  The system will start to fill the rota after 22nd September.

We would also like to remind those who are rostered for SBO/SBC  that part of their duty involves sweeping the pontoons prior to sailing, please.

Best wishes, Duties team.
Oppie Open Next Saturday 14th September

We are delighted to be hosting the Oppie Open Meeting next Saturday, which is both an IOCA SE Travellers event and an RYA SE Area Zone Indicator event, as well as an opportunity for our own Oppie sailors to put all that training into practice at an open meeting without the need to travel, and on their home water.  All the details of how to enter are on the poster above, or click the link below.

Please note that the Lake is closed for cruising and club racing on 14th September
