Cycle or walk to raise money for St. Mary’s or St. Peter’s churches
To take part in the Ride & Stride this September you can download sponsorship and other relevant forms at https://www.friendsofessexchurches.org.uk/ride-stride or contact Stephen Garner (272599) or Annette Whybrow (272773) for further information or you can create your own fundraising page on Justgiving.
Riders and walkers are invited to find sponsors who will pay an agreed sum for each church or chapel visited on the day. This is a national event so you can cross into neighbouring counties and get your form signed up in the same way.
Half the money you raise will be spent on your church building. The other half will go towards repairing church buildings in Essex and East London.
If you can’t take part in the Ride+Stride but would like to make a donation, visit the Essex and East London Churches JustGiving page.

Volunteer(s) needed to assist Boxted Parish Council in Community Hub and Playing Field consultation
Money has become available from Colchester Borough Council to assist in enhancing facilities which will benefit the whole community. Two contributions have been allocated to Boxted:
- Community Facilities Contribution (“for the management of playing fields or the Community Hub”)
- Open Space Sports and Recreation Contribution (“for improvement and enhancement of King George Playing Field with a specific need to improving the Community Hub”)
Any residents who are interested in volunteering with the parish council and Colchester Borough Council to research/decide how the money should be spent can show an expression of interest by contacting the clerk: Karen Thompson on boxtedparishcouncil@gmail.com. Ideally they would have some experience in either research and delivery of consultations or delivering large or community based projects.
This is an excellent opportunity to make a difference to our community.

Langham Community Shop
New volunteers needed
We have been open for almost 15 years and are run solely by volunteers.
The Shop is becoming more popular and used on a daily basis by many in the village and beyond.
We are looking for new volunteers to help run this important asset to the community.
There are four shifts per day during the week - two on Saturday and one on Sunday, all around two hours each, with two volunteers working together. Full training will be given. There is the option of working a regular shift or to fill gaps in the rota when they occur. You just need to add your name to the rota for a shift that suits you best, no commitment is needed.
If you would like to help us run this valuable local shop or would like more information,
please contact our Volunteer Co-ordinator, Cath Hine on 01206 322274

Autumn and winter nights
Create an illusion of occupancy
Stephen Armson-Smith
Crime Prevention Tactical Advisor, Essex Police
Upon walking down the road and with darker nights, it is easy to spot an empty house. There is a line of houses, lights within and signs of occupancy. In the middle of these houses is a similar house but this one is in darkness with no signs of occupancy. It is easy to spot the empty house and chances are the burglar will too. At this time of year an increased number of house burglaries occur between dusk and when you get home. You don’t have to be a magician to create the illusion of occupancy and it may help protect your house.
Become an illusionist and make your home appear occupied even when you are out. Do simple things like putting lights on timers in rooms that you would normally occupy whilst in, and a TV simulator for the evenings. You can now even get a timer that fits over your light switches (search on the internet for 'light switch timer'), door bells you can monitor and answer remotely via your mobile phone. During the day, leave a radio on, boots outside the back door, vacuum cleaner out with the lead going out of sight (not plugged in though), newspaper over the arm of the chair with a drink on the table and a pair of spectacles - the list goes on. Don’t leave garden tools out in the garden though or you may find the burglar uses them to break in. Lock tools away in a secure shed or garage. Use a shed alarm - these can also be remotely monitored too.
