MAC in a Moment

September 11, 2019
MAC believes when we improve assessment, we increase success. This issue offers three ways we are working toward that mission and how you can be involved.

Tis the season...for summative assessment score reporting
M-Step results were released last week. The MDE has responded to legislative changes or other requested improvements to the testing program every year since 2014, making data comparisons and interpretation of trends difficult. However, aspects of the test have remained the same the past two years. So in spite of an average of 11 lost days of instruction due to weather, the modest 2019 gains made in the early grades are worth noting.

State and Federal law requires MDE to test state standards, and they do so with quality measures and accurately report results. MAC’s role in Michigan is to: If you want to learn more, consider joining our upcoming MAC Reads session on September 26, 2019 from 4-5 p.m. This real-time webinar with Jim Popham will focus on his book Assessment Literacy for Educators in a Hurry!, which includes a chapter on score reporting.

Assessment Learning Network
The 2019-20 sessions of the Assessment Learning Network (ALN) are now open for registration! We're looking forward to another enlightening year of learning together about assessment with respected national experts. Featured topics this year will include:
  • Effective Grading Practice, with Ken O'Connor and Arthur Chiaravalle
  • Assessment of Deeper Learning, with Jay McTighe
  • Assessing Social-Emotional learning, with Christina Cipriano
A fourth topic will be announced on the ALN event page when the date and presenter are finalized. The featured topics reflect the feedback provided by last year's ALN members and guests.

ALN members who represent an education organization or constituency attend all full-day events at no cost, thanks to our partnership with the Michigan Department of Education. Guests are welcome to attend any event. The $25 guest registration includes all materials and lunch. Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged for all attendees.

First ALN session looks at grading
Grades are a form of summative assessment. It’s important for educators to know how to make grades useful and meaningful to students and their families. A growing body of research supports the positive effects of rich, descriptive feedback to support learners and promote growth.

In March 2019, we devoted an entire issue of MAC in a Moment to the topic of grading. Read the PDF version of that issue. Plus, our first ALN session, featuring Ken O’Connor supported with practitioner perspective from Arthur Chiaravalle, will address the positive challenges and current tensions associated with grading and reporting practices in a standards-based, 21st century education.

Register today for the November 22, 2019 session. We hope to see you there!
