PTSA Back-to-School Parents' Social Night
Tuesday, September 24 at 7pm, Truva

Special guest: Dr. Bockman

Truva Highland: 842 North Highland Ave, Atlanta, GA 30306 (previous American Roadhouse space)

Come and socialize with friends and other parents, learn something new from higher grades parents!

Dr. Bockman will also give a short update on the school.

Complimentary appetizers and half price drinks!

Cost: $25 advance, $30 at the door
Capacity limited.  All proceeds will support the school!

Early Dismissal Procedure
When you pick up your child for an appointment, illness, etc. please enter the Charles Allen Main entrance and walk into the main office with your ID to sign your child out. Also, if you are having a friend or family member pick up your child, please make sure they are listed as allowed to pick up. Finding parking on Charles Allen can be challenging so you may want allow for some additional time.  The latest you can pick up your child is 2:30 p.m. per APS, but we stretch to 3:00 p.m. No early dismissals are to happen after 3:00 p.m. When scheduling appointments, it is best to try and schedule pick-ups during class breaks or lunch. 



Yearbook 
The back-to-school yearbook sale was such a success, that we decided to extend the price to the end of September. 12th graders do not need order a yearbook (as it is included in your senior dues) click HERE to order.

Senior Families
It time for honor ads in the yearbook for your senior. Click HERE to create and order. Deadline is November 4th!
 



Teacher Needs
Kleenex, Kleenex and more Kleenex. You can drop off in the main office or ship directly to main office at 929 Charles Allen Drive, ATL 30309. The faculty is very thankful for all the donations year to date. Also, appreciated are disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer. 
 



Letter Jacker Orders
Letter Jacket orders will be taken Wednesday, September 18th during both lunches in the café. Deposit is $125.00. Order forms in the main office and with Coach Johnson. Questions: 770-469-4543.
 



PSAT
PSAT – Wednesday, OCTOBER 30, 2019 – All 10th and 11th graders will take the PSAT/NMSQT to measure readiness for college, access scholarships, and practice for the SAT.  This test is free for all 10th and 11th graders.  Ninth (9th) graders have the option to take this test, and the cost for 9th graders is $20. 
 
Here is the LINK for 9th grade payments.  ALL 9th GRADE PAYMENTS MUST BE SUMBITTED BY SEPTEMBER 17, 2019. (You may also pay in the main office using EXACT cash or certified funds only – no personal checks.)

HOMECOMING DANCE 
Please consider volunteering to help with Homecoming Dance. If you are looking for a way to get involved or to volunteer at Grady, we need you!  The Homecoming Dance is coming up October 19th and we need volunteers to help plan and coordinate decorations, food, ticket sales and night of duties.  If you are interested in helping to continue this wonderful tradition, please let us know by sending an EMAIL.

The parent referral window for gifted testing is now open.  Please visit the gifted and talented page on the Grady website for referral instructions or to learn more about our program.  The parent referral window closes on September 30th.

Governor's Honors Program
The nomination process for the 2019-2020 Governor's Honors Program (GHP) is now open. GHP is four-week residential program designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented  10th & 11th grade high school students challenging and enriching educational opportunities not usually available during the regular school year. This program will be held on the campus of Berry College, June 14-July, 11, 2020.  Students must be nominated by a teacher to be eligible to apply. Grady High School College & Career Expo
The School Counseling Department will host  a College & Career Expo Tuesday, October 22, 6:00 PM. Representatives from 4 year colleges/universities, 2 year colleges, technical schools, gap year programs, & employers will be in attendance. Additionally, a college financial aid representative will be onsite to assist parents with the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which opens on October 1. This event is for 9th-12th grade parents & students. We look forward to seeing you there!

Varsity Football looks to notch its second win in a row as they take on Region 6-AAAAA opponent Lithia Springs. It is also Grady Cluster Night, so come out to support current Knights and show future Knights what being at Grady is all about! All Elementary and Middle students with a school T-shirt get into the game free.

Grady Band
Band parent Meeting Monday, September 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the band room. All band parents and students please plan to be in attendance as we will discuss very pertinent information as well as the information about the spring trip.
 



Grady Jesters Summer Accomplishments
Two varsity members of Grady’s Speech and Debate team, seniors, Assata Nkosi and Daniel Wakefield, reached the semifinal round at the University of Michigan Summer Debate Institute. Because of their success, they were invited to take part in the Greenhill School Round Robin. Only sixteen pairs of debaters from around the country are invited to take part, so this is a huge honor. They are competing this weekend! 

Tax deductible donations to help defray the cost of their travel and to fund travel for all of our team members can be made to the Grady forensics booster club. Check out our website.

"Be Excellent" Bocce Ball Tournament
Saturday, September 28, 11am-2pm, Piedmont Park
 
Come play bocce ball and support the Grady High School Mock Trial Trinh Huynh “Be Excellent” Scholarship Award on Sept. 28 in Piedmont Park. Enjoy great food, enter raffles for prizes and have fun! From 11 am to 2 pm, Saturday, Sept. 28, at the park's Bocce Ball Courts. 

Established in 2017, the tournament honors beloved Grady Mock Trial Coach of 10 years and local attorney Trinh Huynh who was tragically murdered that year. All proceeds help fund the annual scholarship which is awarded to a college-bound Grady High School mock trial student and Emory Law School student who works with and assists refugees in need in honor of Trinh.

Volunteer Opportunities

Community Service Hours
Community service hours are managed and stored in a platform called MobileServe. Students can log their hours HERE

They can download the app to their smartphones too. Once their accounts are created, 9th graders should select GP2023 for their organization. This ensures that their accounts are attached to Grady High School.

 



Students Volunteer Needs

To assist each of you in earning the 75 hours of volunteer service required for an APS diploma, there are some really interesting events that you can assist and participate.


Candler Park Fall Fest. 
We are looking for students (12 years or older) to fill some volunteer positions for Candler Park Fall Fest, October 5-6.  Not only do they get a free T-Shirt, connect with neighbors, but are also eligible for earning volunteer hours. 

Fall Fest is FREE and produced by the Candler Park Neighborhood Organization a 501c4. All proceeds from the festival go directly back to benefiting the community.

Parent Volunteer Needs

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)
The 2019-2020 Georgia FBLA theme is "Vision for Your Financial Future".  The purpose of this new state project is to serve as a tool to teach students about personal finances.  We are in need of Parent/ Community volunteers to provide presentations/work sessions designed to support & enhance student knowledge of Financial Literacy.  Please click HERE to volunteer.

Girls Who Code
The Girls Who Code Club is always seeking professionals in computer science, information technology, and web design to provide their expert knowledge and professional experiences.  If you would like to volunteer to provide an interactive session or provide support during a club session please click HERE to sign-up.

Parent C.A.F.E.

Tuesday, October 8, 9:00-10:30am, Coan Building

On October 8th, there will be a Parent C.A.F.E (Circle of Adults Focusing on Education) from 9:00-10:30 AM at the Coan Building, which is located at 1550 Hosea Williams Drive, Atlanta GA, 30317.
