GLOBAL 1989 SERIES FILM SCREENING: ART IN SMOG

As part of the UCIS-wide 1989 Year of Revolutions series, the Asian Studies Center will screen Art in Smog, directed by Lydia Chen.The documentary follows three artists through their careers as they adapt to the rapid technological and cultural growth in Beijing, China. It begins with Beijing's very first experimental art exhibit in 1989 and transitions to the lively 21st century hub it is known as today. At the screening, there will be an introduction by Pitt professor Dr. Kun Qian and a Q+A session with director Lydia Chen. After the film, the Asian Studies Center will lead a high school educator workshop. A light dinner will be provided. Please join us on Tuesday, September 17 at 4:30 PM in 4130 Posvar Hall.
PITT PARK(ing) DAY
Taste teas from around the globe with the Asian Studies Center along with the other University Center for International Studies centers. Starting with a Chinese tea serving demonstration, the Asian Studies Center will have several Asian teas prepared and interactive digital activities to try. This is also a great opportunity to meet Asian Studies Center faculty, staff, and students and to learn more about the Asian Studies Certificate. The event will take place on Friday, September 20 from 10 AM to 2 PM on Schenley Drive (between Hillman and Posvar). The Asian Studies Center will be at the event from 1 PM to 2 PM.
POETRY READING WITH TAKAKO ARAI
Japanese poet Takako Arai is renowned for her focus on sensitive societal topics, such as the hardships suffered by female labor workers and the exploitation from capitalism. Her works include the volume "The Emperor's Unfortunate Lover" (1997) and the book "Beds and Looms" (2013). Numerous pieces by Arai have been translated into English. The poetry reading was made possible through the support of the Japan Iron and Steel Federation and the Mitsubishi Endowments and will take place on Wednesday, September 18 at 4 PM in 602 Cathedral of Learning.

SPRING INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Have you considered teaching high school? Are you interested in Asia? Through the Partnership Advancing Globalized Education (PAGE) program, the Asian Studies Center is offering a 3 credit pre-professional internship for undergraduate students. This internship is perfect for students who want to teach secondary social studies with a specific focus on the history, culture, and present-day issues of China. The intern will work closely with a student teacher from the University's School of Education to observe a high school class and craft lessons about Asia for the classroom curriculum. Preference will be given to applicants who are currently pursuing the Asian Studies Certificate. For more information or to apply, please e-mail asia@pitt.edu.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Sean Laufer (Class of 2021) spent the 2019 summer studying intensive Chinese at Harbin with the assistance of a Summer FLAS Fellowship through the Department of Education. As a finance major in the College of Business and an Asian Studies student, Sean is very aware of the benefits of proficiency in the Chinese language for international business fields. Sean became interested in the language when he was in the 7th grade. In Fall 2019, he plans to continue studying in China through a program with Pitt Business. After completing his degree in finance, Sean plans to join an international bank with an eye toward working in, or around, the Chinese market. Sean has been an intern at the International Business Center at Pitt and has interned with a bank in Shanghai.
