Prayer

We thank you Lord for this term.
For the challenges, the successes, and the mistakes from which we have learnt.
Be with us as we spend our time with family and friends.
Give us strength and courage to do what is right: to be witnesses of our faith.
Help us to be practical Christians these holidays, to appreciate what others do for us, to give time and effort to help others. To be peacemakers in our family.
Keep us safe in our activities; give us good rest and good fun.
Bring us back refreshed and ready for a new term.
We thank you for our peers, teachers and College community that care for us.
May we always be conscious of you in each other and your Holy Spirit working in our daily lives.
Amen.
Catherine and Marcellin... pray for us.

STUDENTS DISPLAYS
Over the last few weeks staff and students from both campuses have presented outstanding displays and performances for viewing by our school community and the general public.
The Arts and Technologies areas had wonderful displays in the Students in the Spotlight and Mercy on Show which complemented the other displays which were prepared for our Open Days on each campus.
The many visitors to the school commented on the amazing opportunities available for our students and complimented the students who acted as tour guides.
Thank you to all staff and students for your enormous efforts in creating, exhibiting and performing at these events.
This week we also participated in the Catholic Education Carnevale which was held in Bunbury.
Once again thank you to the students and staff who performed or produced our display boards for this event.

END OF TERM
Term 3 concludes next week and we can look back on the last ten weeks with pride in all that has been achieved.
Our Year 12 students are coming towards the end of their secondary education in the next few months and we will conclude this term with special events to acknowledge this time.
Each campus will hold a day to share a Year 12 breakfast and liturgy with our Class of 2019.
The day will also include an assembly, lunch and an afternoon of entertainment.
All students in Certificate and General course should ensure that they use the coming weeks wisely to finalise any outstanding work and to set up work experience opportunities.
Students with ATAR commitments will sit their trial examinations in the second week of the holidays.
This is good preparation for the external WACE examinations which commence at the end of October.

FAREWELL
My best wishes to my secretary, Mrs Ana De Gooijer, who will be taking a very well deserved long service leave in Term 4. Best wishes also to Mr Gerard Robertson who is also on long service leave next term.
My thanks to all staff and students for your wonderful contributions to school life this term.
I hope all in our community are able to enjoy a relaxing break and a safe holiday.

God bless

College Activities

Students in the Spotlight
Artistic and creative talent from our Marist campus students was on display when Students in the Spotlight opened on Tuesday 10 September.
The annual exhibition showcases work across all age groups including visual art, media, manual arts, digital technologies and plenty more across the Arts and Technologies learning areas.
Former College student Keely Sheehan, who graduated in 2014, was the opening night guest speaker and shared her achievements since deciding to pursue a career in the arts.
More photos from the exhibition are on our website.

Carnevale
A group of music students braved difficult weather to perform at yesterday's Catholic Education Carnevale at the Graham Bricknell Memorial Music Shell.
The College also had a display stall at this event and our students played to an appreciative crowd.
Film and Photography Excursion
The Year 11 and Year 12 Certificate II Film and Photography students from both campuses  participated in ‘School Screenings’ during August, as part of Cinefest Oz’s schools program.
The screenings and workshops took place at Grand Cinemas and the Dolphin Discovery Centre and featured a screening of the documentary Martha: A Picture Story with an introduction from the film maker.
The students also tried their hand at a series of workshops featuring digital technologies such as Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality.

The Sound of Picture Books
On Monday, the Young Writers participated in a wonderful excursion which combined music and literature, ‘The Sound of Picture Books’, as part of The Literature Centre’s schools program.
The Literature Centre, in partnership with the WA Symphony Orchestra, presented a performance of John Marsden and Matt Ottley’s confronting book, Home and Away.
We were privileged to have illustrator and composer Matt Ottley give us an emotional and heartfelt introduction to the book and his music.
What followed was a moving and extremely powerful performance of the book, featuring large illustration, the superb WASO string quintet (featuring a $30 000 double bass), and a teenage soprano.

Year 9 Professional Lunch
Mercy Year 9 students were able to learn more about career paths they are considering at a special lunch.
Held at the Leschenault Pavilion, students listened to guest speakers before being able to enjoy lunch while sat at a table with an industry professional from their chosen field.
This gave students time to ask questions to their professional and better understand that career.
Health and Physical Education Day
Last Thursday, Mercy celebrated National Health and Physical Education Day.
PE staff worked together to make a free healthy recess that consisted of seasonal fruits, vegetables, dips and popcorn, while the Mercy staff were also treated with a healthy morning tea spread.
The lunch time activities were a huge hit with each PE teacher hosting a new type of sport in which students could participate.
These included spikeball, fitness ball soccer, a challenging mountain bike course, teqball (a type of volleyball using a soccer ball on a table tennis table, rather than hands) and a popular yoga session.
This day was a huge success and we hope to make it a yearly event.

Nursing excursion
On Tuesday 3 September, during the Nursing double period, we visited the School of Nursing at ECU South West Campus.
Students were welcomed by Georgina Ferreira, the Future Student Coordinator, before being taken into the teaching wards in Nursing.
The students monitored the “patients’” heart and breathing rates in the third year ward, which has computer programmed manikins that can simulate any type of health emergency so the student nurses get plenty of practice ready for the stress of real emergency situations.
Our students were taught how to dress in PPE when dealing with patients with infectious disease, or when nursing patients who are immunocompromised.
We were then taken to the midwifery ward where students observed the pregnant mannequins and babies used to simulate birth and post-natal care.
Our nursing students were captivated by the amazing facilities that are potentially available to them for future study at the university.
The nursing teaching staff were very welcoming and accommodating, allowing our students to get a real feel for what they could be studying in the future.
Georgina then discussed pathways that will enable them to further their studies in Nursing.

Politics and Law excursion
Watching a criminal being sentenced in the Supreme Court and visiting Parliament to watch a lively Question Time added up to an exciting day for the Year 11 Politics and Law class.
The students travelled to Perth where they attended Pleas Day in the old Supreme Court building and then observed a District Court case.
This was followed by a court-room activity on recent law reforms and a walk around Elizabeth Quay.
The students were met at Parliament House by Member for Bunbury, the Honourable, Don Punch. Parliament was sitting with the lower house debating the Assisted Dying Bill.
The students finished their excursion with a lecture on the structure of the Australian Constitution at the Constitution Centre WA.

2019 Leavers scarves
Limited stock remains of the 'Marist Leavers 2019' scarves.
The scarves are made by women at a Sisters of Mercy charity in one of the poorest districts of Lima in Peru, and help to provide them with a sustainable income.
To secure this unique souvenir of the year, please contact the Marist campus front office.
The scarves cost $20 each.
Book Fair and Grandparents Morning Tea
Two additional events which were held on the Marist campus Open Day were a Book Fair and Grandparents Morning Tea.
The Marist students spent a wonderful day immersed in books – discovering new authors and identifying books that they wished to read.
The Learning Commons was most appreciative of the support and expert advice we received from Beth Herbert from Dymocks.
We were able to add 25 new titles to our library.
A group of Mrs Yates’ students accepted her challenge to all read ‘Slider’.
Our Year 9 students were also able to share morning tea in the College gym with their grandparents.
Everyone was entertained by musical performances and an inspiring speech by Mr Anthony Blee, before the morning ended with students giving their grandparents a tour of the campus.

Elson Cup
The popular Elson Cup indoor soccer competition came to a close for 2019 in front of a big crowd last Friday.
The lunch time competition pitted five teams of Year 12 Marist campus students against each other in a round-robin before culminating in the grand final.
Students from all year groups took every available vantage point for the decider, which required a thrilling penalty shootout to decide the winning team after a tense match.
Queensland competitions to challenge students
Two Mercy students will both head to Queensland within the next month for sporting competitions.
Year 7 student Christian Huey will represent WA in a rugby exchange during the upcoming school holidays, which will be the second time he has represented the state.
He trialled back in April and was selected for The Armidale School competition and has been training twice a week in Perth.
Year 10 student Charlotte Haskayne has been selected in the WA boxing team, and will defend the national title she won last year.
We wish both students all the very best of luck for their competitions!

Ex-Students News

Ebony's football success
Ebony Bilcich (class of 2015) has enjoyed a couple of stellar weeks in her footballing life.
She was the co-winner of the Nola Marino Medal for the best player in the South West Football League's women's competition (pictured left) despite missing several games due to her basketball commitments.
She then captained South Bunbury to a grand final win last weekend, completing an undefeated season.
Asian Science Camp experience - by Trinity Mangano (2018 College dux)
In July this year I had the amazing opportunity to attend the 13th Annual Asian Science Camp (ASC). This year’s camp was held in Shantou, China, at the GTIIT (Guangdong Technion Israel Institute of Technology).
I can honestly say that this was one of the most incredible opportunities I have had the pleasure to experience, and I highly recommend it to any student who is interested.
In order to qualify for the ASC I had to achieve a High Distinction in one of the Science Olympiad Exams.
These are available each year and any Earth and Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry or Physics student can participate – just ask your teacher!
Eight Australians were chosen to attend the 2019 ASC, and in China we met with students from across the world – New Zealand, Israel, Russia, Japan – 25 countries in total.
Each day we were introduced to new scientists and Nobel Prize Winners. All of them had so much knowledge to share and were so willing to answer all our questions about their research.
One of my favourite lectures was by Professor Eliezer Rabinovici from Israel, who spoke about Particle Physics and String Theory – topics which I found very interesting.
As well as attending lectures, we worked in small groups to create a poster on a scientific topic throughout the week. This was a great opportunity to make friends with people from different countries.
The camp was packed full of cultural opportunities as well!
We were able to buy Chinese Souvenirs from stalls on campus, try on cultural headgear and watch traditional woodcarving.
We also visited the Craft Master’s Park – a museum full of Chinese art, as well as Chen Ci Hong’s Former Residence – a gigantic mansion full of Chinese history.
Each morning we were also given the opportunity to learn Tai Chi from qualified instructors!
Along with the rest of the Australian Team, I challenged myself to buy one interesting ‘cultural drink’ each day from a nearby supermarket – we discovered many exotic flavours, including seaweed and even fizzy milk.
Finally, at the end of the camp, each country put together a cultural performance to show the other delegations.
We saw traditional Japanese singing and dancing, Chinese poetry and New Zealand’s Haka.
The Australian Team performed an ‘Aussie Slang Quiz’, which other countries enjoyed a lot!
Altogether the Asian Science Camp was an incredible experience and it’s something that I hope Bunbury Catholic College students can experience in the future!
