Clever people travel by train - SBB
Clever people travel by train - SBB
by Hans Thöni, 1958

In the mid-1950s a new era of railway advertising began at the Swiss Federal Railways: the era of cheerful advertisements with humorous graphic designs. This rhyming slogan, “Der Kluge reist im Zuge” (clever people travel by train) became the SBB’s most famous slogan ever.

Railway Station Buffet Basel
Railway Station Buffet Basel
by Cuno Amiet, 1921

This connoisseur of good food and wine is about to enjoy a meal at the Bahnhofbüffet Basel, a restaurant at the Basel railway station. Evidently, this means we can expect to be served first-class cuisine here! A rare, attractive 1921 stone lithograph by the great and famous Swiss painter Cuno Amiet.

Roco Peas - Return your empty cans
Roco Peas - Return your empty cans
by Herbert Leupin, 1944

Herbert Leupin’s posters have become icons of consumer goods marketing. Leupin was also an illustrator, hyper-realist, collagist and brand designer as well as a moralist. The brilliant Roco canned food poster represents all of these characteristics. Unlike today, in 1944 empty cans were recycled because of resource scarcity caused by the war. This perfect lithograph is very rare.

IV. International Aero Meeting Zurich 1937
IV. International Aero Meeting Zurich 1937
by Otto Baumberger, 1937

Otto Baumberger had a great ability to communicate strong, clear visual messages. Looking at this very rare poster from the late 1930s, we can almost hear the motors of the approaching aeroplanes. There are offset reproductions of this poster from 1981, but this stone lithograph is the original version.

SBB exhibition in Zurich

For over a century, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) have ensured a high level of mobility and shaped public life in large parts of the country. Their high-quality design, which is part of a carefully thought-out brand appearance, makes the national railway company an outstanding example of Swiss design history.

The current exhibition at the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich presents a comprehensive overview of SBB’s achievements in architecture, industrial design and visual communication. Original objects, photographs, posters, video installations and a model railway invite visitors on a journey through time, from SBB’s beginnings to tomorrow’s mobility.
