Best practice of the month : Saying Goodbye to remote team members or putting the ‘Good’ in Goodbye.

Have you noticed how it’s common for people to come and go in virtual meetings without saying hello or goodbye? The same thing often happens in virtual (project) teams, where members – permanent or temporary- may suddenly be gone and other members wonder what the xxx happened?

Systems theory (organisational constellations, based on Hellinger) teaches us the importance of rituals in social systems such as families and teams.

What happens when you do not provide an appropriate leaving ritual when a team member leaves? On an unconscious level, the team is out of balance, which may manifest itself in feelings of uncertainty, fear, envy and anxiety. These feelings distract from the task and the performance of the team is likely to suffer.

How blog author Teresa Douglas puts it: ‘Saying goodbye can help you and those around you to work through difficult feelings and find closure. It may feel awkward in the moment, but taking the time to say goodbye will help you honour your past and clean your slate for the next phase in your professional life ‘(http://www.teresamdouglas.com/)

For remote team leaders, this means they need to think about the proper goodbye ritual that fits the individual that is leaving as well as the rest of the team. Even if the team member is leaving involuntarily, acknowledging the person’s contribution and wishing them well helps those who stay with closure and moving on.  If the remote team member leaves in positive circumstances, why not have remote team celebration where everyone brings their own drink for a toast?

New training programme: Interactive webinars

Does this sound familiar?

Many presenters dread facilitating webinars. The thought of managing a web platform with a mind of its own - or the threat of crashing software and the fear of not being able to manage a technical fault – all make facilitators nervous.

So how can you be clear and engaging when you don’t know if people are listening, or checking their emails? Indeed - are they even there?

Fear of losing your audience’s attention is another common concern, alongside managing the technology and keeping your presentation going.

Learn virtually to run large group online sessions (webinars). Our vision is that online events can be meaningful, inspiring, impactful and fun.

Managing Interactive Webinars (MIW) shows you how to:
  • Facilitate webinars with skill and confidence
  • Make the best use of the technology
  • Create an engaging, friendly and highly productive webinar environment
  • Mastering technology: preparation, role of the producer and having a disaster recovery plan
  • Features and tools for a high level of engagement
  • Increase the impact of your webinars

The MIW programme takes off on Thursday January 16, 2020. Check here for the latest details on our Calendar.

Tip of the month

‘’All truly great thoughts are conceived by walking” — Friedrich Nietzsche, Aphorism 34

One study found
12 minutes of walking to increase happiness, vigour, and attentiveness significantly more than the same time spent sitting.

It may sound trivial, but we schedule a 5 minute break after every 60 minutes of virtual classroom group work and we encourage participants to get away from their computer and walk, to get a drink or go to the bathroom.

Their engagement during the next hour of the session clearly increases as a result. Your virtual meetings will also benefit from frequent breaks when team members go stretch their legs. And people feel better.

The session is meant for anyone who is interested in training or coaching online.

We would love to welcome you to any of the following dates in the Calendar - and don't forget to book your space. And for the demo sessions in November and December we will be focused on the new programme (MIW) as taster sessions to introduce to this wonderful new programme.
