The Arc of the New River Valley and Virginia TASH are sponsoring a policy forum focused on issues of concern to people with disabilities, their families, service providers and advocates. This forum will be a listening opportunity for our policy-makers to hear your stories, your positions, and your concerns.

Arc of Virginia Public Policy Platform for 2020

Fully Fund the Waiver Wait List—Starting with Priority 1 in 2020
Virginia is currently the 39th ranked state for providing integrated, high-quality developmental disability services.  Correcting this by appropriately recognizing our critically underserviced constituency is both an ethical and a moral imperative.  Addressing the urgent Priority 1waiver wait llist is a pro-family, fiscally-sound investment that concretely supports our community-based services system and undergirds the foundation for quality care for all Virginians in need of services.

Increase Waiver Reimbursement Rates
Appropriately investing in home and community-based services (HCBS) includes appropriate service coverage for Virginians with disabilities and their families.  In some cases, individuals have waited years in order to receive their waiver, only to then discover they are unable to obtain services on that waiver because of the low rates.  Pay rates for Direct Service Professional is woefully inadequate resulting in high turnover and an insufficient supply of provider.

Other issues the Arc of Virginia continues to be concerned about and to advocate for include:
  • Increasing the opportunity to for students with disabilities to be included in general education classing in their neighborhood schools.
  • Addressing the barriers that prevent people with disabilities from getting and retaining jobs including inadequate transportation, access to job coaching and employer recruitement.

We hope you will plan to come to the forum even if you don't want to speak out. It is important that we fill the room so that our lawmakers see that a large number of their constituents care deeply about these issues and are depending on them to take actions on behalf of people with disabilities. For those unable to make it, the event will be live streamed at www.facebook.com/arc-nrv/.  For more information contact Arc of the NRV president Chris Cadwallader at 239-4911.
