Metrolinx Announces Service Expansion in Niagara Falls
With the success of 11 years of summer season weekend Go train service between Toronto & Niagara Falls, Metrolinx has announced that weekend Go train service will continue year round, starting Aug. 31. The announcement was part of a larger expansion across the GO train network — there will be 84 more train trips each week on the Lakeshore East, Lakeshore West and Kitchener lines, and 65 extended trips on the Lakeshore West, Kitchener and Stouffville lines.

The move increases rush-hour, mid-day and evening availability in the GTA and Hamilton area. “These changes are another major step in our GO expansion program,” said Metrolinx president and chief executive officer Phil Verster. “The new express option for Kitchener will save customers 20 minutes in their daily commutes, we’re doubling rush-hour service for West Harbour GO, and weekend Niagara service will now run all year.” Verster said offering nearly 150 new and extended weekly GO train trips means “our customers have more options to travel when they want to go.”

Niagara Region Receives $29 Million from Federal Government for Canada Summer Games
The 2021 Canada Games in the Niagara region is getting $29 million from the federal government to build two new sports facilities and fix up seven other sports venues. The Canada Games is the largest multi-sport event in the country. It is held every two years and switches between the winter and summer games.

The 2021 Canada Summer Games will be the first time where the host has been a region; all other games have been hosted by single municipalities. Canada Games says that the games will be hosted across all twelve Niagara Region municipalities.  It will also be the third time that the games have been hosted in Ontario. The $29 million will come from the community, culture and recreation infrastructure stream of the federal government's "Investing in Canada" infrastructure plan.

Ontario Government Confirms New South Niagara Hospital

Planning for the new South Niagara Hospital took an important step forward as Infrastructure Ontario has listed the project (Niagara Falls Hospital) in their Market Update for Projects in Pre-Procurement.

The South Niagara Hospital is listed in the Market Update to start issuing RFQs (Request for Qualifications) in spring 2021 and issuing RFPs (Request for Proposals) in winter 2021 with a financial close in 2022.

"This new hospital represents a significant and important investment in healthcare in Niagara," says Angela Zangari, Interim President, Niagara Health. “With the government’s support, we are one step closer to a new hospital and we look forward to our continued work with the Ministry of Health to plan the next stage."

Niagara Health provides 90 per cent of the acute hospital services in the region and as the community ages, increased services associated with older adults will be required.  To support these needs, a significant emphasis on senior’s health and wellness will be included in the Stage 2 submission.

"We are very excited to have our project confirmed by Infrastructure Ontario knowing how important it is to meet the healthcare needs of the people of Niagara,” continues Zangari.  “The new hospital will be an integral part of a connected healthcare system that will improve the patient and caregiver experience and strengthen access to local services."

Over the last several months, Niagara Health has engaged over 1,000 staff, physicians, patients and members of the community for input on the design vision for the new South Niagara Hospital, to be located at the corners of Montrose and Lyons Creek roads in Niagara Falls.
