VDR Training Opportunity on Sept. 14

Because many of us live in Hays County but work in Travis County, you might be interested in an opportunity to easily become a Volunteer Deputy Registrar in Travis County on Sept. 14.

Travis County has a much simpler process of becoming a VDR than Hays County. Its elections office provides training sessions that do not require the typical Secretary of State exam, which is standard in most counties like ours. You just sit through the training, raise your right hand and recite the oath and bam — you are a VDR in Travis County.

And not only that, once you are a VDR in Travis County, all you have to do is take your VDR card down to the Hays County Elections Office, which will automatically recognize your VDR status in Travis through a reciprocity agreement. So then you can also register voters in Hays County.

So if you like this idea, just sign up on the Google Form and show up at Akins High School library in South Austin at 10:30 a.m. on September 14. The address is 10701 S 1st St, Austin, TX 78748.

Akins is very easy to get to on a Saturday morning and is a quick 20-minute drive from most places in Kyle and even quicker from Buda.

If you just want to become a VDR in Hays County, read our website post that describes the full process and provides answers to frequently asked questions.

Fair Maps Texas Shares Recommendations to Ensure Fair Redistricting Proces

After next year's census, all legislative districts in Texas will be redrawn to reflect new population numbers.

On Saturday, Kyle/Buda-Area Democrats hosted a presentation by guest speakers from Fair Maps Texas and the Texas Civil Rights Project to discuss important upcoming hearings related to the next round of redistricting in 2021.

This presentation explained the processes and procedures that Hays County residents can use to raise concerns at the upcoming redistricting hearings and throughout the legislative process in 2021.

Fair Maps Texas provided a Redistricting Testimony Guide and a set of Recommendations to Ensure a Fair and Open Redistricting Process. The recommendations include a few sample scripts that can be adapted to help you compose your testimony that can be submitted at the hearings or to a member of the redistricting committee.

If you are unable to attend a hearing and would still like to provide testimony, you may email or call legislators on the Redistricting Committee.  A list of committee member information can be found here: http://bit.ly/2KrYk0N

The next KBAD membership meeting is Sept. 19. Here's a list of other events in September and October as we lay the groundwork for 2020.

Attend a Debate Watch Party on Sept. 12

New KBADer Sharon Blancarte has agreed to host a debate watch party on Sept. 12. She lives at the apartments in Kyle behind Kohls called Oaks at Marketplace and she has reserved the community/party room there for the watch party. She says the room features a large TV, kitchen/dining areas.

Sounds like a great place to watch a debate among friends. She asks that folks bring a drinks and snacks.

Please sign-up using our Mobilize event!
