Welcome to our Autumn Ezine, featuring information about the Great British Beach Clean, where to recycle batteries, what to do with all those apples... and much more.

Great British Beach Clean
Help make 2019 the biggest clean-up ever!
As well as the regular Beachwatch events throughout the year, the Marine Conservation Society(MCS) organise the Great British Beach Clean which takes place in September each year.

This year it’s happening on the 20th to the 23rd September 2019.
You can register or join in with a pre-arranged event so that the data can be included in the survey. At every Beachwatch beach clean, volunteers survey the first 100m of beach. The data collected at these events is shared with the International Coastal Clean-up (ICC), contributing to a worldwide report on litter levels. MCS also analyses the data and uses the results to raise awareness of pollution and tackle it at source in the UK.

More information can be found on the MCS website and the Suffolk Coast and Heaths team are also available for advice or may know of an event near you.

Here’s a summary of Suffolk's results from last year’s survey…

Household Batteries
Don’t forget that batteries can be recycled at all major retailers and at all of Suffolk’s Recycling Centres. Just store them at home in a leak proof container (a jam jar is ideal) and take them along when you next visit. If you can’t find where they go, just ask a member of staff.

You find batteries in many household items: toys, remote controls, mobile phones, watches, alarm clocks and even doorbells, but there are many ways to reduce single-use batteries - buying recharging items or using rechargeable batteries, along with solar and dynamo solutions too.

Please don’t put batteries in your rubbish bin. Although we no longer send waste to landfill in Suffolk, using batteries as a fuel for energy from waste (EfW) is not ideal. Batteries contain heavy metals and other hazardous materials that need to be separated and recycled, including lead, cadmium, zinc and lithium.

Recycling batteries safely and correctly is a great way to help protect the environment. Each battery placed in a designated battery recycling bin will be taken apart and the materials will be used to make something new.

Redesigning your compost area or planning a new one?

Come and have a look around Suffolk’s energy from waste facility

You may (or may not be) aware that we no longer send general waste to landfill in Suffolk. If you would like a closer look at the energy from waste facility in Gt Blakenham, where Suffolk’s non-recyclable rubbish is used as a fuel to make enough energy to power over 30,000 homes, you can take advantage of the next round of public open days. It’s a great opportunity for a tour around the award-winning plant, which was designed by Grimshaw Architects who also designed the Eden project.
Places are available on the following dates:
            24 October 6pm
            14 November 2pm
            11 December 6pm
There are up to 20 spaces available on each day, and pre-booking is essential. Email suffolkefw.uk@suez.com or call 01473 839149 to book a space.

Recycling Centres Opening Times
From October to March, Suffolk Recycling Centres open 9 am – 4 pm.
That means that there are only a few weeks left of the summer opening hours during September, where sites stay open to 5 pm.

All sites are open 6 days a week, come rain or shine, and are closed every Wednesday, but it’s always a good idea to check @suffolkrc before you go for the latest information.
Suffolk Recycling Centres accept a wide variety of material for recycling.

You can also donate items for re-use on all sites to help support local charities. Visit the Ipswich Reuse Shop at Foxhall Recycling Centre and grab a bargain. Come and have a rummage - you never know what hidden treasure you might find!

Sorting your recycling before you go into different materials can help speed up your visit.
Charges apply for soil, rubble and hardcore

Use our A-Z of recycling for the best ways to reduce, reuse and recycle most items and if you can't find what you need let us know!
