Let's Learn About...
From being a football winter game to keep cricketers fit during off-season, Australian Rules Football has risen in stature and now has become one of the most popular sport in Australia.

The sport that was originally created in Melbourne, drawing inspiration from the Indigenous game of ‘marngrook’, continued to blossom and evolve over the years up into the 18-team national competition that we have today.

With more than 150 years of history, Australian Football has become more inclusive, multicultural, and celebrated than ever before. Sit tight and let’s learn more about AFL Victoria!

Love Sport? Let's learn about... AFL Victoria

What is AFL Victoria?

The AFL is a sport for everyone and can be enjoyed anywhere from the lounge room having fun with family and friends, to outdoor ovals, and mainstream local and professional clubs throughout Australia.

AFL Victoria’s vision to be the most accessible sport for all Victorians is encompassed through its programs which they facilitate for the wider community.

You can visit the AAA Play website and find your AFL programs here!

Here are a few of the programs specifically designed to enable people with a disability to participate in the game.

Access for All Abilities Auskick

The NAB AFL Auskick program makes learning to play AFL fun, safe, and easy for all children, aged 5-12. Through weekly coaching sessions they will learn the skills of the game in an exciting, social, and safe environment. NAB AFL Auskick prides itself on providing an inclusive and safe environment for everyone to participate.

The NAB AFL Auskick program has centres that operate all over Victoria. There are selected centres across Victoria who have received additional training in supporting children with disability to take part in Auskick settings. These groups are supported by coaches who have experience working with people with disability. Children are free to move from the AAA group into their age group whenever they feel comfortable, and should they ever wish to move back into the AAA group, they are able to do so.

The game is played on an indoor basketball court, with five players from each team on court. Many of the traditional AFL rules apply, with a handball the equivalent to a kick, and an underarm throw the equivalent to a handball.

The league is for everyone aged 14 and over. It's fast, it's fun, and inclusive!
