Secondary News Issue 4

Dear Secondary Gecko Parents,

Given this week is shortened by the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, the Secondary school has been abuzz with activity and opportunities.  Our Grade 9 Scientists were busy inquiring into the how certain materials react to heat.

Out Middle Schoolers selected their Student Council (STUCO) with a number of entertaining and sincere speeches from articulate and dedicated young people who want to make a difference by leading the Middle School.  The process was well received and congratulations to those who were elected and a massive thank you to everyone who nominated themselves because you were all risk-takers.

The Middle School Back to School Night Tuesday saw a significant number of parents spend the evening connecting with teachers and gaining insight into the courses their children are undertaking.  It was great to see the connections that parents were making and the appreciation they felt for the time and energy the teachers had taken to make the evening a success.  It is the connection of home, school and our adolescents that really helps them to grow and develop.

Our Sports teams were active again this week with both the footballers and volleyballers having matches.  Of the 6 matches played, we won 4, with a couple of strong wins against QSI as the highlights.  To find out more about the results please visit the webpage below for weekly results and points tables, which are updated on a weekly basis. Next Tuesday our cross-country, swim, HS touch rugby and MS badminton teams all start their seasons.

It is always good to know that our students go beyond the range of sports and activities offered through the school to be involved in various areas of passion.  Alexander Chang in grade 7 recently attended the 2019 SHENZHEN Municipal Junior Championship in Rock-climbing. This event was held by Municipal Bureau of Culture, Broadcast, Tourism, and Sports (the government bureau in charge of recognized sports competitions in Shenzhen).  Alex achieved two silver medals out of three events, in both the difficulty challenge climbing and bouldering competitions at the U15 age group.  Rock-climbing has become a very popular sport in the last decade and we would like to congratulate Alex on his achievements and hope he will continue to develop his skills and encourage others to try this growing sport.

Over the next two days SIS Bayside will host a first-of-its-kind event that will bring together 130 educators, students, and community members, from six different countries and a dozen schools.  The Shekou SDG Summit, will focus on how schools and communities can help to meet the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.  The regional conference will have a powerful group of featured speakers, and more than 30 workshops for attendees.  The summit will also feature student presentations, including two groups from SIS, sharing how they have used their passions and energies to help their communities.  SIS looks to continue to provide our students with the knowledge and expertise to use their talents and passions to promote a healthier and more sustainable world.  This summit will provide an amazing opportunity for our teachers to continue to expand their connections and share resources with a growing community of international schools and community partners.

Our After School Activities (ASA) program starts this coming Monday with a wide range of opportunities for both our Primary and Secondary students.  This complements what has already begun, such as the Fashion Show, MUN, and Housebuilding just to name a few.

PSA Reps will be visiting Advisories on Tuesday, September 17th to distribute SIS/ PSA Duffle Bags to each Secondary student. This is our free gift to you, our amazing students, from the PSA!  They make great travel bags for vacations, sporting events and Week Without Walls!

A reminder that next Thursday (19th September), for Middle School, and Friday (20th September), for High School, we have our annual Beach Day Retreats that were postponed for earlier this month due to possible typhoons.  Students need to be at school by 6:15am on the respective days with departure at 6:30am.  As we will be enjoying a day in the sun with activities such as sailing, kayaking, and paddle-boarding please check your child has a water bottle and sunscreen especially, among the other items on the packing list.  We are positive it will be a fun-filled day of teamwork and opportunities to build relationships.

A question that has been raised recently from parents is: “How do I contact a teacher and what should I do if I don’t know that teacher’s name?”  Please feel free to contact an SIS teacher by email, we are all here to help. If you are unsure of the teacher’s name or email address, please send an email to Peggy Han (phan@sis.org.cn) and she will assist you.

To all our families, we hope you have a very enjoyable 4 day break to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival and look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday

All the best

Nathan Lill (MS Assistant Principal)
